10 year old Filipino-American boy crowned World Sport Stacking champion

Ten-year-old Steve Purugganan from Longmeadow, Massachusetts set two new world records at the World Sport Stacking Championships. The Filipino-American boy became this year’s World Sport Stacking champion by clocking 1.86 seconds for the Individual 3-3-3 Stack Division and also clocking 6.21 seconds for the Individual Cycle Stack Division. The previous record holder for both events was himself.

Sport stacking is formerly known as cup stacking and commonly known as speed stacking.Here’s the two events that Steve Purugganan set records on:

3-3-3

StackCups are “up stacked” and “down stacked” from left to right or right to left (individual preference) in three stacks made up of three cups in each stack (3-3-3).

Cycle Stack

A sequence of stacks combining a 3-6-3 stack, a 6-6 stack, and a 1-10-1 stack, in that order. Stackers conclude the Cycle stack with cups in a 3-6-3 “down stacked” position.

A powerful, emotional and relevant reminder of the heartbreaking toll war takes on the innocent, Nanking tells the story of the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China, in the early days of World War II. As part of a campaign to conquer all of China, the Japanese subjected Nanking – which was then China’s capital – to months of aerial bombardment, and when the city fell, the Japanese army unleashed murder and rape on a horrifying scale. In the midst of the rampage, a small group of Westerners banded together to establish a Safety Zone where over 200,000 Chinese found refuge. Unarmed, these missionaries, university professors, doctors and businessmen – including a Nazi named John Rabe – bored witness to the events, while risking their own lives to protect civilians from slaughter.

The story is told through deeply moving interviews with Chinese survivors, chilling archival footage and photos of the events, and testimonies of former Japanese soldiers. At the heart of Nanking is a filmed stage reading of the Westerners’ letters and diaries, featuring Woody Harrelson, Mariel Hemingway and Jurgen Prochnow. Through its interweave of archival images, testimonies of survivors, and readings of first hand accounts, the film puts the viewer on the streets of Nanking and brings the forgotten past to startling life.

Nanking is a testament to the courage and conviction of individuals who were determined to act in the face of evil and a powerful tribute to the resilience of the Chinese people – a gripping account of light in the darkest of times.

Bobby Jindal on The Tonight Show

Bobby Jindal was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Monday. Who is he you may ask? Piyush “Bobby” Jindal was elected governor of Louisiana on October 20, 2007. He won a four-way race with 54% of the vote. At age 36, Bobby Jindal became the youngest current governor in the United States. He also became the first elected Indian-American governor in U.S. history, as well as the second Asian-American governor to serve in the continental United States after Gary Locke of Washington. Rumors are floating around that Bobby Jindal may become John McCain’s running mate.

Kristi Yamaguchi waltzes and cha-cha-chas on Dancing with the Stars

Kristi Yamaguchi danced twice this week on “Dancing with the Stars.” First the Viennese Waltz and then the Cha-Cha-Cha. Although the dance partners did not do as well as the previous weeks. They still ranked high.

Margaret Cho Day in San Francisco

It’s Margaret Cho Day in San Francisco on today!

Join Margaret Cho and her friends at San Francisco City Hall, as Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaims Wednesday, April 30th 2008, Margaret Cho Day!

The live event will be taped for use in Margaret’s new show, “The Cho Show,” which will air on VH1 this summer. The proclamation is open to the public, welcoming family, friends and fans of all ages. All attendees will be required to sign a release allowing the use of their image on television.
