APA Month Day 5 – Actor Kal Penn

Kal Penn aka Kalpen Suresh Modi has burst onto the Holloywood scene the past few years with starring roles in National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, The Namesake, and most recently Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay. He can also be seen as a regualrly oon TV as Dr. Kutner on Fox’s House.

Despite his success, Kal Penn has seen his share of racism in Hollywood. In his first audition in Los Angeles for a commercial, he was asked “Where’s your turban?” When he explained why he didn’t wear a turban, the casting director told him to “put on a bedsheet or something”. Partly as a joke and partly to test if anglicized names appeal more to a white-dominated Hollywood, he changed his name from Kalpen Modi to Kal Penn on his resume and photos. Suprisingly, callbacks for auditions increased. Although he still prefers Kalpen Modi, he is stuck with his working name Kal Penn in Hollywood.

With his experience in acting and auditioning, Mr. Kalpen Modi (aka Kal Penn) is currently an adjunct professor in the Asian American Studies Department at UPENN teaching ASAM 109/CINE 109/SOCI 109 “IMAGES OF ASIAN-AMERICANS IN MEDIA” for Asian American Studies, Cinema Studies, and Sociology! This course examines contemporary popular images of Asian Americans in the US media, with a specific focus on popular film and television. Guest lecturers that have spoken in Professor Modi’s class include Margaret Cho, executives from New Line Cinema, Daniel Chun (Writer, The Simpsons), and Vali Chandrasekara (Writer, My Name is Earl).

Dim Sum Funeral with Kelly Hu and Bai Ling

According to Variety, Kelly Hu has signed on for a lead role in “Dim Sum Funeral,” directed by Anna Chi. This U.S.-Canadian indie flick does not have a large budget, but looks like some six-degrees-of-separation connections brought together a interesting cast including Bai Ling, Russell Wong, Steph Song, Lisa Lu, Julia Nickson, Francoise Yip and Chang Tseng.

The film is about the lives of estranged adult siblings from a Chinese-American family who return home after the death of their mother. Production has already started in Vancouver. Bai Ling was spotted last month shooting scenes for the “Dim Sum Funeral”.

Both Bai Ling and Kelly Hu were recently at the Asian Excellence Awards.

Gamblerz Crew breaks into Hype Nation

Last week, Variety reported that South Korean dance crew Gamblerz will star in Paramount’s dance movie “Hype Nation”. The Gamblerz crew was recently featured in Benson Lee’s “Planet B-boy”. The film will follow dance battles between the American R&B group B2K and Korean group the Gamblerz. The $25 million picture will be produced by Young Film’s Young Lee. The Korean-American producer, who previously partnered with American hip-hop artists, is now casting for a Korean female lead.
In June, members of the Gamblerz crew will design dance movements with B2K for movie scenes. Production begins in the United States in July and in Korea in August. About 60% of the movie will be shot in Korea. The film is expected to be release worldwide in early 2009.

PGA Golfer Anthony Kim wins Wachovia Championship

Korean American golfer Anthony Kim, 22, became the youngest winner on the PGA tour in more than six years. In the final-round, he shot three-under par 69 to finish on 16-under 272. Kim’s 16-under was the lowest score in Wachovia tournament history, breaking the tournament record by 3 shots set last year by Tiger Woods. This tournament was only his 38th PGA start.
