Manny Pacquiao defeats Oscar De La Hoya

Add this fight to Manny Pacquiao’s Greatest Hits. After much hype about the Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (29) vs Oscar “Golden Boy” De La Hoya (35), Filipino boxer Pacquiao soundly defeated De La Hoya in a lopsided match at the MGM Grand Garden Arena before a crowd of 15,001. De La Hoya was heavily favored to win the fight by 2 to 1. However, Pacquiao’s speed and power demolished De La Hoya. Through 8 rounds, Pacquiao was credited with landing 224 of 585 punches to just 83 of 402 for De La Hoya. After the 8th round, Oscar De La Hoya did not come out of his corner and threw in the towel.

Before the match was called, Pacquiao was ahead on judges’ scorecards, with two judges scoring the fight at 80-71 and one posting it at 79-72. Complete domination. Pacquiao’s stats now improve to 48-3-2, with 36 knockouts while De La Hoya falls to 39-6.



Manny Pacquiao is the first Filipino and Asian boxer to win four world titles in different weight divisions. He took over as the Ring Magazine pound for pound number one ranked boxer in the world on June 9, 2008 after Floyd Mayweather, Jr. announced his retirement from boxing. Pacquiao is rumored to fight junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton next.
