Violinist Sue Son on Britian’s Got Talent

This isn;t really Asian American, but still Asian releated. Britian’s Got Talent has been overshadowed by Susan Boyle’s singing around the world. This week was the show’s semifinal. Susan Boyle still held the limelight, but there was an Asian British act on the show too. Violinist Sue Son dubbed the “Vixen with the Violin”. (She reminds us of violist Vannessa Mae. Anyone remember her? She supposed to a new album this year.) Well, to get on Britian’s Got Talent, the 24 year old Sue Son had to ditch her music partner keyboardist Janine Khalil. The two were best friends since the age of 17. Apparently, the judges told Sue Son to ditch her friend at the auditions and do Britian’s Got Talent alone. The judges believed that Sue Son had the talent and were “vindicated” when she made it to the semi-finals. That was as far as she got. Watch the video below.

Would you sacrifice friendship for success?

More about Sue Son

Sue Son has been playing the violin since she was 6 years old. She came over from South Korea when she was 9 to study at the Purcell School of Music and is still studying music now at Guildhall, specializing in the violin.

Asian Pop Stars Prepare For US Crossover

NY1 Asian Music Week concludes with a look at Asian Pop Stars Preparing For their U.S. Crossover. New York native Utada battles with peritonsillitis just as her second US album This is the One is released. Se7en’s been in NYC for the past 3 years collaborating with the likes of Lil’ Kim, Darkchild, and Three 6 Mafia. Wonder Girls backed by JYP could be in for a megahit with the English version of Nobody. Also some interesting commentary by Miss Info in the video. (Check out America’s Great Asian Pop Star Race too.)

Timing may be right for some of these artist to breakthrough to the US market. Here’s some of our observations:

Se7en’s album has been delayed many times and his song Girls is not ranking on any of Billboard’s play list. Multiple delays in the album release spells major problems for Se7en. If he doesn’t release his album soon, look for him to head back to Asia.

Utada’s song Come Back To Me has been on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play for the past 10 weeks with a peak position of 5. This past week she held the #17 for top internet albums. Unfortunately, she can’t promote her album in the US while she’s sick. She has the potential to breakthrough, but not touring the US will hurt her.

Wonder Girls have not released an English album or song yet, but have already garnered a large Internet following all over the world. The highly anticipated release of the English version of “Nobody” could catapult the group ahead of the pack. They already have the backing of Perez Hilton. Hope they will not be a one hit wonder.

Although BoA is not based in NYC, she is also making inroads to the US market. BoA’s I Did It for Love reached a Peak position of 29 on Bilboard’s Hot Dance Club Play. She recently signed with CAA to accelerate her US push. Currently, she is doing a radio tour around the country promoting her latest single.

We think the BoA, Utada, and Wonder Girls have the best shot at breaking through the US market. The biggest star will most likely be BoA or Wonder Girls. We hope this doesn’t end like all the Asian American TV Networks that launched and failed like Comcast’s AZN and MTV Chi.

Remember Laura Ling and Euna Lee

Happy Memorial Day! We just saw a video remembering Laura Ling and Euna Lee. These two Current TV reporters were detained by North Korea since March 17th. It’s been more than 10 weeks. In recent weeks, there have been vigils all across the USA. Here’s a recent message from the Ling and Lee Families:

Dear Friends,

The families of Laura and Euna are moved beyond words by your show of support for our girls. The past 10 weeks have been the most stressful of our lives. We believe that the girls are in no physical danger and for that we a grateful. But as their days in detention progress, we have become increasingly concerned about their well-being and state of mind. Though the girls are strong, we know that they are very very scared.

We know that our government is working very hard to secure their release, but given the sensitivity of the situation and the fact that our two countries have no diplomatic relationship, our families are not making any public comments other than to thank you so very much for coming out to support our girls.

Many of you have never met Laura or Euna, but know that you are standing up for truth and justice. We, the families of the girls, deeply thank you for taking the time to be here to support two girls who just wanted to tell the world a story.

Most appreciatively,

The Families of Laura Ling and Euna Lee

Keep Laura Ling and Euna Lee in your prayers and hope they come back soon.
