Hollywood Chinese on PBS

We wrote about Hollywood Chinese about a year ago. The film went from coast to coast last year. Now, the 90 minute documentary gets its national premiere today as part of the American Masters series on PBS. Check your local listing for air times this week.

We can’t say enough about Hollywood Chinese. It covers everything from yellowface (like we have on the Last Airbender), stereotypes in movies, and the struggles of Chinese American breaking into Hollywood from both the actor and director point of views. The film includes interviews with Joan Chen, James Hong, David Henry Hwang, Nancy Kwan, Ang Lee, Christopher Lee, Justin Lin, Amy Tan, Wayne Wang, and BD Wong. This is a must see film.

Nanking on Hulu

Nanking is available on DVD
, but now you can watch it FREE on Hulu. Nanking is a powerful reminder of the heartbreaking toll that war takes on the innocent, and a testament to the courage and conviction of a few individuals determined to act in the face of evil. The film tells the story of the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China in the early days of World War II and focuses on the efforts of a small group of unarmed Westerners who established a Safety Zone where over 200,000 Chinese found refuge. The events of the film are told through deeply moving interviews with Chinese survivors, archival footage, and chilling testimonies of Japanese soldiers, interwoven with staged readings of the Westerners’ letters and diaries as performed by Jurgen Prochnow, Woody Harrelson, Stephen Dorff, and Mariel Hemingway, among others. Look for Rosalind Chao and Michelle Krusiec in the film.

BTW – if you have Comcast, you can catch over 10 hours of Asian American programming exclusively through Comcast On Demand. Go to your Comcast On-Demand Menu, and all the programs are located in Top Picks > Asian Entertainment.

Crazy MMA footage of Jose Canseco vs Korean kickboxer Hong Man Choi in Japan for DREAM 9. The 44 year old Canseco got a couple good shots in on Hong Man Choi, but the match lasted 1 minute, 17 seconds.
