Redlight by Lucy Liu

Lucy liu is promoting a film she both produced and narrated called “Redlight”. The documentary film is about children sold into human trafficking. It follows several girls over the course of four years as they are kidnapped and sold to brothels in Cambodia. Human trafficking is the third most profitable business in the world after weapons and drugs trading. It’s going to take awhile before we can eradicate human trafficking. Watch some of the clips below.

Aoki – a documentary film

We didn’t know there was an Asian American founder of the Black Panthers. Check out the new documentary Aoki. It premieres today in the San Francisco Bay Area. More info here. Here’s a synopsis of the film:

AOKI is a documentary film chronicling the life of Richard Aoki (1938-2009), a third-generation Japanese American who became one of the founding members of the Black Panther Party. Filmed over the last five years of Richard’s life, this documentary features extensive footage with Richard and exclusive interviews with his comrades, friends, and former students. Viewers will learn about Richard’s childhood in a WWII Japanese American concentration camp, growing up in West Oakland, and serving eight years in the U.S. military. The film explores previously unknown facts about the formation of the Black Panther Party such as how Richard became intimately involved in its founding and contributed the first two firearms to the Party. AOKI highlights how Richard’s leadership also made a significant impact on individuals and groups in the contemporary Asian American Movement. Richard’s contributions to the groundbreaking organization Asian American Political Alliance (AAPA) and its involvement in the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF) student strike led to the formation of ethnic studies at U.C. Berkeley. Above all else, AOKI is a film that demonstrates the incredible dedication to justice that one man’s life has had and how the lessons of solidarity, commitment, and discipline can carry on from one generation to the next.

Ryan Higa at 2009 NewTeeVee Conference

Fresh off the presses. Ryan Higa aka NigaHiga, the most subscribed YouTube channel, talks about his experience on YOuTube. He doesn’t speak much in public, so it a rare chance to hear about what he does behind the scenes. Here’s a few notes from the interview:

He thinks about the audience and what they want when making his videos. (He reads the comments)

Some of the more popular videos include ninjas, fake accents, movie parodies, and his own brand of sarcasm.

The videos are produced with a Flip video recorder. (no high end stuff here.)

Collaboration with other Youtubers are done through email and twitter. (Contrary to the belief that there are YouTube rivalries)

He talks about his past projects (Ryan and Sean’s Not So Excellent Adventure, Ninja Melk) along with future projects (hoping for TV, wants to work with Will Smith, sticking with comedy)

Watch the whole interview below.
