Asian Kids teaser by Kero One x dumbfoundead x Tablo x Myk

Asian Kids teaser by Kero One x dumbfoundead x Tablo x Myk
From his upcoming third album, Kero One is back with his first single, entitled “Asian Kids.” Known for his laid back grooves and jazzy hip hop sounds (See Keep Pushin’, Welcome to the Bay, and When the Sunshine Comes), Kero One throws a curveball here, experimenting with a dark, syncopated beat, cinematic synths, and a sped up rap flow. “Asian Kids” features Tablo (front man of the Korean group Epik High), MYK, and Dumbfoundead, bringing together various rap styles to address the often controversial issues of Asians in America. This music video is gonna be tight and just in time for APA Heritage month.

Kero One states, “I rarely hear anyone address these sort of issues in the media, much less in music recordings, so I thought I would gather all my favorite Asian artists and have them drop their two cents.”

The official music video for Asian Kids drops May 18, 2010. Kero One’s third full length album entitled Kinetic World releases June 2010. There’s also a Dumbfoundead x Dok2 x MYK x Kero One Tour at the end of May too.

Billionaire by Traphik x Victor Kim

Billionaire by Traphik x Victor Kim

Here’s a dope collabo between Traphik and Victor Kim of Quest Crew. Victor strums the ukulele and sings the chorus, while Traphik spits the two verses and freestyles. Love this combo. (Thanks Leanne K.)

Lyrics to Billionaire by Traphik x Victor Kim

Now i never been a really rich dude
Gimme some clothes on my back, and a plate full of food
But my biggest fear was growing up to be someone nameless
As a kid, i just knew i was gonna be famous
Not an if, it was a question of when
I’d make my dreams come true, and not have to pretend
Put th genius to the paper, all i need is a pen
Flashing lights every night when i’m eatin with friends
I’ll buy my own TV station just to shout and speak
Then buy my mom and dad like 5 houses- each
Cuz everytime i try to think about the fancy places
All i see is the struggle in my family’s faces.. sooo

I got my own private jet with a seat in the back
All day, hometown buffet, i would just eat and get fat
I’d pick up every fan that ever cared and wrote me a..
note and we’d float on my boat to Timtopia
My private island where the girls are butt naked
And if there’s drama in the world then we wont be affected

If I Was Like You by Wesley Du

The channelAPA.com crew met director Wesley Du at the 2010 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. His short film “If I Was Like You” premiered at the 2009 DC APA Film Festival, but hasn’t gotten into the Asian American film festival circuit due to its controversial and edgy theme. Here’s a synopsis:

Living in South Central Los Angeles, Billy finds it impossible to fit in. His father, Daniel, finds it impossible to live without Billy and goes to extremes to take matters into his own hands.

This short definitely challenges the audience and doesn’t provide easy answers. Hopefully, this piece can be used to open up dialogue about racial tensions that occur between the Asian American and African American communities, especially when violence is a factor. You can see some of the online discussions about the short here.

what’s your reaction to this short? What kind of emotions do you feel as you watch the film? Should this short have more visibility on the Asian American film festival circuit?
