ABOUT THE SLANTS
It’s rare for a band to be headlining shows with 5,000-15,000 fans in attendance and internationally touring in their first year as a band. What originated as a side project for Simon Young (of The Stivs) in 2007 proved to be one of the most energetic and contagious movements of music in our time. In case you haven’t heard, The Slants are the first and only all Asian synth-pop band in the North America and they have been melting faces off all over the globe.

Kicking off the band’s career at a tiny dive bar in Portland, OR, The Slants soon found themselves on tour and in demand worldwide performing at music halls, colleges, and anime conventions. Within months, they released their debut album “Slanted Eyes, Slanted Hearts” winning multiple awards. Since that first iconic show in 2007, The Slants have been cited as the “Hardest Working Asian American Band”, toured North America ten times, rejected a million dollar recording contract, were the first and only Asian band to be a Fender Music artist, and according to U.S Congress, the first rock band to play inside a state library.

By the end of 2008, the band had been featured in over 1,200 magazines, radio stations, websites, and television shows for their self-proclaimed “Chinatown Dance Rock,” including a feature on NPR’s “All Things Considered” that blasted across 700 FM stations across the country for months.

The following year, The Slants headlined a SXSW showcase (other acts at the festival included Katy Perry, Metallica, and Devo), launched several more tours spanning North America, and released a dance remix album entitled “Slants! Slants! Revolution,” while donating 100% of the proceeds to benefit cancer research affecting Asian American women.

2010 saw the release of The Slants’ third album, “Pageantry.” Pageantry featured a number of local Portland icons including Cory Gray (The Decemberists), Krista Herring, Mic Crenshaw, and Gabe Kniffin (Silversafe). The harder hitting, guitar driven songs still featured The Slants’ signature dance rock flavor and again, massive touring throughout the country continued. The Slants have shared the stage with acts such as Apl.de.Ap (Black Eyed Peas), Vampire Weekend, Girl Talk, Girugamesh, M.O.V.E and Boom Boom Satellites.

The band is currently touring nationwide while working on their fourth release.

We Were by Siow

We Were by Siow

Hot new R&B artist Siow (Derek Siow) has been on a whirlwind journey which led him to the completion of his first studio single “We Were” off his upcoming album “Another Day.” The nostalgic song is about remembering when we were young without responsibilities and young love. Fans help select this song to be made in to a music video through a poll in August 2010.

For his album, Siow collaborated with John Altman, legendary composer of James Cameron’s Titanic. “It’s amazing how fast things can move in this industry. You talk to one guy who ends up being friends with another guy who has worked with Bryan Adams and Ronan Keating. The next thing you know, you are introduced to a man that wrote the entire music score for ‘Titanic’ and has played with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton…and he’s playing one of the songs you wrote and is featured on your album. It’s incredible.” says Siow.

As well as working with John Altman, Siow’s brand new album also features a contemporary cover of the Billy Joel classic ‘Honesty’. The Australian born artist is bursting onto the British R&B scene with his unique blend of R&B beats combined with real, raw instrumentals, and is backing up the launch of his brand new single and album with a series of live gigs across the UK.

The single, ‘We Were’ has already hit the number one spot in the ReverbNation R&B/Soul National Chart in Australia and Siow is hoping that UK audiences will also embrace his signature sound. Born and raised in Melbourne Australia, he began playing the piano at age five and has had a love for music ever since. Legendary composer John Altman said “it’s like a breath of fresh air” when listening to Siow’s music where live instruments such as the piano and spanish/flamenco guitar feature from track-to-track.

Siow’s first single ‘We Were’ is set to be released on December 6, 2010. Look for his 13 track album soon.

Lyrics to We Were by Siow

Verse 1
Reminiscing of a time
You and I was such a new thing
We could teach each other how
To treat each other right
Bridge
Like when I saw you
And u saw me too
And I wanted to talk to u and
U came and talked to me
And we got to talking
And it all began from there
Chorus
We were young and
Just having fun and
We would do whatever we wanted to
It was us and
Just no one else and
That’s what we’ll always know
How we were we were oh
Verse 2
I just want to tell you
it’s embedded in my mind
though no one will ever know
I still remember all those times
Bridge
Like when I saw you
And u saw me too
And I wanted to talk to u and
U came and talked to me
And we got to talking
And it all began from there
Chorus
We were young and
Just having fun and
We would do whatever we wanted to
It was us and
Just no one else and
That’s what we’ll always know
How we were we were oh
Middle 8
‘Remember when’ is my favourite game
Whenever I’m thinking of you
For some reason I always smile
Whenever I’m thinkin’ of you smilin’

More about Millions the web series
MILLIONS is the story of a crew of Asian-Canadian twenty-somethings in the picturesque suburban neighborhood of Adlard. Brandon (the dreamer) and his lifelong friends, Deron (the clown), Mary (the tomboy), Charlie (the cynic), Jay (the playboy), and Eddie (the brain), work mediocre 9 to 5 jobs, and waste away their nights bumming the streets aimlessly. The emptiness of their lives makes them apathetic, but not enough to do anything about it. Until a tragedy hits the group that sparks Brandon on a quest.

In high school, the group made a pact to become millionaires by the age of 30. It was a childish dream that faded with time. But after recent events, Brandon refuses to let it go any longer. He persuades his friends to join him in becoming the millionaires they once promised each other they’d be. And prove to each other that dreams aren’t something easily forgotten.
