Peace Love Ukulele by Jake Shimabukuro

Peace Love Ukulele by Jake Shimabukuro

Jake Shimabukuro (she-ma-boo-koo-row) continues to revolutionize our perception of the ukulele with the release of his new album “Peace Love Ukulele”. He’s been compared to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis with their respective instruments. With drums, bass, and even orchestral strings filling in the spaces behind the ukulele, his album conveys the complete musical vision of one of the world’s most original talents. “The ukulele,” he says, “is the instrument of peace – and if everyone played the ukulele, the world would be a better place.”

Standout tracks on ‘Peace Love Ukulele’ include Shimabukuro’s compositions “Go For Broke,” a tribute to Japanese-American WWII veterans and “143,” inspired by the numeric pager code for “I love you.” The rock-ukulele piece, “Bring Your Adz” takes his virtuosic playing to new heights while his version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” adds another chapter to his growing repertoire of memorable interpretations. Here’s the full tracklisting:

1. 143 (Kelly’s Song)
2. Bohemian Rhapsody
3. Bring Your Adz
4. Boy Meets Girl
5. Go For Broke
6. Trapped 2010
7. Variation On A Dance 2010
8. Pianoforte 2010
9. Five Dollars Unleaded 2010
10. Ukulele Bros.
11. Hallelujah
12. Bonus Track: Bohemian Rhapsody – Live Version

Bohemian Rhapsody,” the only solo ukulele arrangement on the album, ambitiously recreates Queen’s epic rock and roll anthem. “It was quite a challenge considering the ukulele only has four strings and two octaves.” Shimabukuro said.

Margaret Cho to be in Thugs : The Musical

Margaret Cho to be in Thugs : The Musical

Comedian Kevin Avery is fundraising to shoot his short film, Thugs, The Musical. It’s about about Michael Gardner, a mediocre, slightly delusional, and very “non-urban” black actor in Hollywood who, after years of auditioning but not being considered “black enough” to be cast in any of the roles that his fellow black actors have been getting – the Gangsta, the fast-talking Sidekick, the one doomed Black Guy at the party in the horror movie – decides to write, direct, and star in his own theater production – an epically bad play called Thugs, The Musical – to show Hollywood (and the world) that he, too, can “act black”.

The film, shot as a faux documentary, chronicles the making of the play, from rehearsals through its disastrous opening week, and spotlights a well meaning, but horribly inept cast performing musical numbers like “Who’s That Keepin’ It Real?”, “Drive-By” and “Oh No She Di-in’t” in what may possibly be the worst musical ever conceived.

Among the people in the cast is comedian Margaret Cho, who plays Yvette. She shows a little bit of the character in the video below. Margaret should fit perfectly in this musical as she has been releasing music videos off the musical comedy album “Cho Dependent” with songs like Intervention, Eat Sh*t and Die,I’m Sorry, and Lice. Also slated to be in Thugs : The Musical are David Alan Grier, Baron Vaughn, W. Kamau Bell, Rachel True and Prodigal Sunn from Wu Tang Clan. You can support this project here.

Agent Orange : 35 Years later

Agent Orange : 35 Years later

In the San Francisco Bay Area, a special report about Agent Orange recently aired. Returning to her homeland, CBS 5 anchor/reporter and Vietnam Reporting Project fellow Thuy Vu reports on one of the most contentious issues remaining from the Vietnam War – the legacy of Agent Orange. During the Vietnam War, more than 20 million gallons of the dioxin-contaminated defoliant were dumped on Vietnam jungles, affecting its people and the soldiers who fought alongside American troops. Vu travels to Vietnam to report on the impact of Agent Orange on Vietnam, 35 years after the end of the war. Generations of Vietnamese continue to be born with birth defects and other illnesses believed to be the result of exposure to herbicide Agent Orange. She also explores how the toxin that was sprayed by US forces has impacted both Vietnamese veterans and US veterans of the Vietnam War.
