Project P-noise : Mini Documentary

Project P-noise : Mini Documentary

Here’s a couple interesting mini documentaries about Filipino B-boys. The documentaries follow the work of Asian Canadian B-boy Dyzee from the Supernaturalz. His goal was to go back to his country, the Philippines and give back to the b-boys out there. Many of the bboys live in very difficult economic conditions, having next to nothing, except for their love for bboying. Dyzee states, “I heard stories of bboys who are almost beggars by day, and put whatever money they have together in order to go to the little internet hut, just to get a few moments of watching bboying on youtube. This really touched my heart so I decided to go back and give the only thing that I know I can give.”

To accomplish his mission, he created Project P-noise, a charity mission initiative to develop the bboy community in the Philippines by reaching out to the already existing bboys, especially in impoverished areas. The goal is to inspire the bboys of the Philippines to become world-wide contenders, by teaching them multiple free workshops, developing relationships with them and sharing with them the knowledge of how to make a living from this world renown dance. At the end of the workshops, a bboy battle is held for the bboys of the Philippines to put their skills and knowledge to the test, and giving them opportunities that they have only dreamed of.

Exposure with Leonardo Nam

Futurestates season 2 continues with “Exposure” with Leonardo Nam. Imagine a near future where the relationship between medicine/science and society are broken down. When there is a mass infection, how skeptical are we about the government’s motives for urging citizens to get the vaccine? Here’s a synopsis of the short:

Roxanne (JoNell Kennedy) is a government agent who works as a live body contagion to immunize urban populations. Jesse (Leonardo Nam) is an anti-contagion activist, whose office is breeched by Roxanne’s team. Led by Roxanne, the contagions try to contain the workers inside the building, chasing them down in an attempt to mass-inoculate, while Jesse, caught in a cycle of fear and illness, soon learns that there are no easy answers.

Junko’s Shamisen

Junko's Shamisen

The short film “Junko’s Shamisen” has been circulating the film festival circuit the past year. Now, the Canadian short is available to watch online for FREE. Here’s a synopsis:

Blending the aesthetic of Japanese Kabuki, contemporary manga illustration, stop-motion, cell and computer animation; writer, director and animator Sol. Friedman brings you this stylized, imaginative and haunting tale of vengeance.

Set in the rural backwoods of feudal Japan, a young peasant girl named Junko, returns home to discover her blind grandfather brutally murdered. Filled with despair, Junko, accompanied by a mystical fox spirit, abandons her old life and sets off for the village in search of better fortune. While begging, young Junko inadvertently encounters the evil samurai lord responsible for killing her grandfather and with the influence of the fox spirit, avenges her grandfather through a gruesome act of poetic justice.

“Junko’s Shamisen” offers an amazing display of visuals bringing the story to life. It’s like a live action graphic novel.
