Cinemetropolis album by Blue Scholars

Cinemetropolis album by Blue Scholars

Blue Scholars hasn’t released an album since 2007, but these guys are back with their third full-length studio album, Cinemetropolis. A few months back sign a deal with the people by asking them to fund their new album. They skipped the record deal route and took it to the fans. They believe the power of word-of-mouth far more than industry-induced hype, recognizing that it’s been the support of their fans that got them where they are today. During the fundraising process, they asked for $25,000. What they got back in return from the fans was over $60,000. That’s some major word of mouth and fan support.

Blue Scholars has now finished the 15 track Cinemetropolis album. Cinema has always played a major influence in their music, and this collection of songs is the most complete expression of that source of inspiration. During the creation of this collection of songs, an idea emerged: how does music influence cinema? Cinemetropolis will be both an album and a collection of films inspired by the music. A sort of reverse movie soundtrack. With this project, each song, through collaborations with an array of filmmakers, will take on a life its own. They got a gang of music videos, short films and multimedia projects in the works, anchored by a featurette directed by longtime Blue Scholars collaborator Zia Mohajerjasbi.

Look for Cinemetropolis to drop in June 14, 2011, followed by a Fall tour and the first wave of video projects. The music has already made its way online. Support them when the album comes out.

George Takei vs. Tennessee’s “Don’t Say Gay” Bill

George Takei vs. Tennessee's Don't Say Gay Bill

George Takei takes on the Tennessee Legislature and its “Don’t Say Gay” bill, in the way only George Takei can!

A bill now pending in Tennessee would prohibit teachers in that state from discussing homosexuality in the classroom. The so-called “don’t say gay” law is premised on the misguided belief that, by not talking about gay people, they can simply make us disappear.

George is here to tell Tennessee, and all the LGBT youth and teachers who would be affected by this law, that he is here for you. In fact, he is lending his name to the cause. Any time you need to say the word “gay,” you can simply say “Takei.”

Have a TAKEI old time!

The Star Trek alum is on a roll with the past few videos he’s done. Did you see George Takei Should Be Spiderman on Broadway?

National APA HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

National APA HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

May 19th is National APA HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This day is officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services with the first National Awareness Day held in 2005. Organizations around the country dedicated to providing HIV/AIDS services to Asian Americans host events in their communities to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS-related stigma.

While HIV is still seen as a men’s issue, the disease continues to rise unchecked among APAs and APA women in particular. Recent analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that APAs have the highest rate of increase in new HIV infections in the nation, the only statistically significant growth among any racial or ethnic group, and yet two-thirds of APAs have never been tested for HIV. The rate of increase for Asian American women is actually higher than that of Asian American men, but the misconception that APAs are not at risk for HIV persists—even among healthcare providers who discourage APAs from getting tested. In fact, a recent study by Dr. Hahm indicates that APA women are less likely than other ethnic groups to be offered an HIV test in OB/GYN settings.

A number of factors contribute to the HIV risk for Asian American women, including a lack of targeted HIV prevention information for women, unequal power dynamics in sexual relationships, biological differences and the fact that a woman’s HIV risk is often indirect. A woman’s HIV risk is her partner’s HIV risk and many women in monogamous relationships are shocked when they test positive. Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of APA women living with HIV got it through heterosexual contact (86%). APA women are four times more likely to have an STD than an APA man.

“By 2050, A&PIs will represent about 11% of the US population,” says Lance Toma, executive director of A&PI Wellness Center. “We could be facing a public health disaster if we fail to address the rise in HIV and STD infections in our communities now.”

“Saving face” is a common cultural concept in A&PI communities, where individuals seek to protect the family from perceived public shame or disgrace. In practice, “saving face” contributes to silence about sex, HIV, and safe sex practices. Saving face and stigma also lead to higher rates of HIV infection and a lack of knowledge about one’s HIV status.

Saving face can’t make you safe. Talk about HIV—for me, for you, for everyone

Together music video by Baiyu

Together music video by Baiyu

Singer Baiyu released a music video for her song “Together” off her Fan Fair album. “Together is an R&B feel good song,” she confides. “It’s definitely a song that’s meant to empower the listener and really convey that things are going to be okay. Essentially, my music is the byproduct of my personal story. Hopefully, my story, through song, will help others in need.” Here’s more from Baiyu about her music video:

The shoot for “Together” was definitely one of the most fun times I’ve had doing a music video! My other two videos (Sweet Misery and When We Dance) were done in Hawaii, which I absolutely love, but coming home to New York to film this one with my close group of friends just felt right. Jamming out in the subway station was such a humbling experience.

I’m lucky to have a ton of great friends and fans who are supportive of the message and spirit behind the song. I’m so glad that we all had a chance to come together and share our personal thoughts and words of encouragement with the folks in Japan who are still rebuilding through the rubble of the tsunami and earthquake devastation. I really want the video to be a heartwarming take on how we can all do our part to help each other in a time of need, no matter how large or small the effort. This whole project is very close to my heart.

100% of the proceeds from “Together” and the EP “Fan Fair” will go to the Japanese Red Cross. Get you copy on Together - Single - Baiyu.

Lyrics to Together by Baiyu

Chorus:
You know you can come to me
Whenever you’re in need
I will stand by your side
Through and through

Whenever you’re feeling down
I’ll pick you up off the ground
Just know that you’re not alone
We can win this fight together

Verse I:
Through hard times
In simple ways
That’s how I show you
That I care for you (yeah)

I know we’ve been through
Ups and downs
But you wiped my tears away
Told me that we’ll find a way

Sub Chorus:
Now we’re sitting on top of the world
Just you and your favorite girl
And I
Know that nothing can defeat us

Just hold my hand
And I’ll hold yours
If we never let go (go)
Baby we got it

Chorus

Verse II:
There’s never been a pair like us
Anybody’s seen before
Jordan and Pippen ain’t got
Nothing on us we’re too hot

Nothing can come between the two
And everything you are
To me
Makes me believe
And now

Sub Chorus

Chorus

Bridge:
Noone ever has to be alone
There’s always someone to count on
Even though you might think you’re on your own
Just look around for somebody to say

Chorus

Rick Quan interviews Jeremy Lin & Rex Walters

Rick Quan interviews Jeremy Lin & Rex Walters

Our readers in the San Francisco Bay Area will remember sports anchor Rick Quan. It’s been a minute since we heard from him, but the guy is coming back strong with his own website, AsianAmericanSports.com. Here’s a little more about his site:

During my thirty years as a local television sportscaster I have always had a desire to showcase Asian American athletes. For too long Asian Americans, especially men have suffered from poor stereotypes. Often portrayed as physically weak and inferior to others this website hopes to help change that image. In the future I plan to bring you the stories of Asian American male and female athletes who have broken stereotypes and are pioneers in their sport. Please tell your friends and feel free to make suggestions on who you would like to see profiled.

Glad to see Rick Quan back doing what he’s passionate about and helping Asian American athletes. See his interviews with Asian American pioneers Jeremy Lin and Rex Walters.

Now that Jeremy Lin has finished his first season in the NBA, Rick Quan had a chance to sit down and talk to him about his journey to the pros, breaking racial stereotypes and how he was able to handle the pressure of being the first Chinese American in the NBA.

Rick Quan interviews half Japanese athlete/coach Rex Walters and talks about his journey as a HAPA in the NBA. Even after his career as an athlete, he’s still contributing as a basketball coach.
