GO! OHANA : July 2011

GO! OHANA : July 2011

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, join GO! OHANA this Friday as they present their latest event. Coming with the summer heat, GO! OHANA proudly presents some of the hottest artists. On July 8, 2011, bands such as The Savages and Golda & The Guns alongside artists like Bochan Huy, will create harmony in their music. Come and join them in the sun and fun at the historic La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley. They’re on a mission to create a new Pan Asian Arts Movement by supporting artists and connecting them with the community.

FEATURING:

The Savages

Vallejo grown rock & roll

Golda & The Guns
The beautiful, savage sound of full grown adolescence, GOLDA SUPERNOVA arrive in splendid new-millennium rock fashion – 3rd World born, 1st World bred, with new wave appetites, fed on old school hair rock, perverted by punk, a lil’ bit of funk, and completely addicted to majestic chaos. LAVA, their first LP, is the product of struggle, stubborn individuality and torturous dedication. Tracks like “FALL,” “DIAMOND,” and “FALSE,” are all arsenic and ear candy, full of fast-paced new wave bass, classic rock riffs and the drama of a good novel.

The Launch of Bochan Huy’s Music Video, “Chnam Oun 16″
Bochan is passionately sowing the seeds of a new style of diva. Born in Cambodia and raised in Oakland, her exposure to various genres and cultures has led her to bridge tradition and innovation. Her collaboration with pianist and producer Arlen Hart has created music that is powerful, soulful and moving (in every sense of the word, just ask the DJ’s who are spinning her tracks around the world). Bochan grew up traveling around the US, singing for her father’s Cambodian rock bands. That journey is alive today in the music, which has moved from rock roots to its current inception. Stepping out from the traditional style, Bochan looks to enter a new musical age.

Just added the comedy stylings of:

Mark Zhang
Mark Zhang aka Zhangster has been ripping through the comedy scene from West Coast to East Coast, from London to Hollywood. His powerful stage presence has been seen at top comedy clubs around the country and internationally. Zhangster’s unique high energy comedy hits hard on social issues with clever twists. His improve is unpredictable and his audiences are always surprised by his edgy wit.

Joe Nguyen
Subtle but sharp, laid-back yet engaging, Joe Nguyen is the smart slacker beloved by audiences for his easygoing delivery and well-written jokes. Raised in the state of Georgia by immigrants of Vietnamese and Jewish descent, Joe was destined to become a stand-up comedian. His unique perspective and likeable stage presence have made him a favorite at clubs, colleges, niche shows and private events throughout the country.

Kim’s Convenience play

Kim's Convenience play

Toronto reader, check out the play “Kim’s Convenience”. It’s also the winner of the 2011 Toronto Fringe New Play Contest. Here’s a synopsis:

Mr. Kim is the proud owner of Kim’s Convenience, a local store in Regent Park, downtown Toronto. He lives in a small 3 bedroom apartment above the store with his faithful wife and their 30 year old daughter. He’s always dreamed that one day he would pass the store to one of his children but today he was given a generous offer for the store.

From hilarious to poignant, Kim’s Convenience tells the comedic story of a Korean family in Toronto struggling with the future of their convenience store amidst the echoes of their bitter past. Loosely based on the prodigal son story, it is a play about debts and reconciliation.

You can catch Kim’s Convenience as part of the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival this week and next. Get more info on tickets here.

Two Asian American-backed non-profits that channelAPA.com has been following are getting together for a fundraiser. The Jubilee Project is partnering with The Supply to build the first secondary school in Lenana, Kenya. (It’s the same one Kevjumba is backing.) This school would service orphans and slum children in Lenana, providing them with an affordable education and advancing their educational pursuits.

The mission of The Supply is to empower and transform communities through education. They move from village to village in developing countries working with local schools and community leaders on educational projects that secure the education for all children. In their most recent campaign, The Supply is aiming to raise $50,000 to build a secondary school that would service orphans and slum children in Lenana, providing them with an affordable education and advancing their educational pursuits.

For every view that the video receives until July 31st, sponsors will each donate a penny. Help spread the word.
