Walk by Goh Nakamura

Walk by Goh Nakamura

Singer Goh Nakamura dropped a new track “Walk”. He’s experimenting with creative new ways to create music. Here’s more about his latest work:

Here’s a new tune I wrote. Actually wrote it on a walk to the coffee shop one day, just speaking words into my phone as they came into my head… pretending like I was having a conversation with someone.

This song was sort of an experiment, I wanted to write it away from an instrument… starting with words. I usually sit around with a pen and paper, but I found that the left/right rhythm of feet against concrete gets my brain going. When I get to the coffee shop, I sit down with a cup of joe, jot stuff down. Then I walk home, humming revisions or new ideas.

I made this video yesterday, walking the same route as I did when I wrote the song in November. I tried walking my cat on a leash, but he wasn’t having it. There’s some footage of my friend’s home/studio in San Juan Bautista, where I recorded it.

House(hold) Beat by Andrew Shum

House(hold) Beat by Andrew Shum

Musician Andrew Shum took a bunch of household items to make some interesting music for an electronic music composition class. The assignment was to record 20 different sounds using various household items, and then synthesize them into a song using only slicing, pitch transpose, gain, and EQ. He created a beat made using sounds from 10 things he found in the house. The following sounds were used:

Hitting a bean bag – kick drum
Slapping a notebook against my knee – snare
Scraping butter knives – high hat
HTC Android ringtones – glitch line
Playing a scale on a casiotone mt-45 – bass and glitch line
Speaking in falsetto – glitch line
Strumming a guitar – chord overlay
Starting up a vacuum cleaner – filter sweep
Shaking a plastic bag – “crash cymbal”
Walking on hardwood floor and opening a door – intro
Pressing a “that was easy” button – glitch line

All sounds were recorded using his MacBook Pro’s internal mic, and were EQ’d / repitched in Ableton Live. Wonder if he got an A for this assignment? Kinda reminds us of Elevated by Paul Dateh.
