10 year old Filipino-American boy crowned World Sport Stacking champion

Ten-year-old Steve Purugganan from Longmeadow, Massachusetts set two new world records at the World Sport Stacking Championships. The Filipino-American boy became this year’s World Sport Stacking champion by clocking 1.86 seconds for the Individual 3-3-3 Stack Division and also clocking 6.21 seconds for the Individual Cycle Stack Division. The previous record holder for both events was himself.

Sport stacking is formerly known as cup stacking and commonly known as speed stacking. Here's the two events that Steve Purugganan set records on:

3-3-3
StackCups are “up stacked” and “down stacked” from left to right or right to left (individual preference) in three stacks made up of three cups in each stack (3-3-3).

Cycle Stack
A sequence of stacks combining a 3-6-3 stack, a 6-6 stack, and a 1-10-1 stack, in that order. Stackers conclude the Cycle stack with cups in a 3-6-3 “down stacked” position.

Nanking - DVD Release

A powerful, emotional and relevant reminder of the heartbreaking toll war takes on the innocent, Nanking tells the story of the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China, in the early days of World War II. As part of a campaign to conquer all of China, the Japanese subjected Nanking – which was then China’s capital – to months of aerial bombardment, and when the city fell, the Japanese army unleashed murder and rape on a horrifying scale. In the midst of the rampage, a small group of Westerners banded together to establish a Safety Zone where over 200,000 Chinese found refuge. Unarmed, these missionaries, university professors, doctors and businessmen – including a Nazi named John Rabe – bored witness to the events, while risking their own lives to protect civilians from slaughter.

The story is told through deeply moving interviews with Chinese survivors, chilling archival footage and photos of the events, and testimonies of former Japanese soldiers. At the heart of Nanking is a filmed stage reading of the Westerners’ letters and diaries, featuring Woody Harrelson, Mariel Hemingway and Jurgen Prochnow. Through its interweave of archival images, testimonies of survivors, and readings of first hand accounts, the film puts the viewer on the streets of Nanking and brings the forgotten past to startling life.

Nanking is a testament to the courage and conviction of individuals who were determined to act in the face of evil and a powerful tribute to the resilience of the Chinese people – a gripping account of light in the darkest of times.

This film has also won several awards:
Winner, Best Cinematography Award, Chicago International Documentary Film Festival, 2007
Winner, Humanitarian Award, Hong Kong International Film Festival, 2007
Winner, Crystal Heart Award, Heartland Film Festival, 2007

THE CHO SHOW (7 Episodes - 30 Minutes)
Thirteen years after her catastrophic foray into television, Margaret Cho is triumphantly returning to television in a new reality-sitcom on VH1 in "The Cho Show." This time it's on her own terms.

Margaret burst onto the scene in 1994 with her sitcom "All American Girl" and her struggles with the network over that show are legendary. After the show was canceled, Margaret channeled all of that negative energy from her network experience into a wealth of comedy material that fueled her rise as one of the hottest comics in the business.

This VH1 series will follow the irrepressible Margaret Cho and her eccentric entourage as she fights to be herself in an industry that in the past wanted her to be something other than herself. The series will touch upon all aspects of Margaret's "anything goes" lifestyle, from the strained and awkward moments provided by her somewhat traditional Korean parents to the more irreverent and outrageous moments shared with her colorful cast of friends and colleagues.

Protesters want CNN to fire Jack Cafferty

Lots of protests the past few weekends at CNN locations all over the US. Thousands have protested Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta (CNN headquarters) over statements made by Jack Cafferty that were broadcast on "The Situation Room" back on April 9, 2008. Here's the quote in question:
“We continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export, you know, jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we’re buying from Wal-Mart. So I think our relationship with China has certainly changed. I think they’re basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years.”

Listen the the controversial statements by Jack Cafferty:

CNN Protest in Atlanta (CNN headquarters)

CNN Protest in San Francisco

CNN Protest in Los Angeles

CNN Protest in Chicago

Although CNN had offered an apology, the Chinese government rejected it as inadequate. CNN Beijing bureau chief Jaime FlorCruz was summoned to a meeting at the Chinese Foreign Ministry with with Liu Jianchao, director general of the Foreign Ministry information department. The situation looks bad for CNN and Jack Cafferty. Looks like a lot less coverage for the Beijing Olympics for CNN.

Also a Beijing-based primary school teacher Li Lilan and a New York-based beauty therapist Liang Shubing are filing in a law suit for $1.3 billion against CNN for slander. The $1.3 billion equates to $1 per person in China.

Erik Spoelstra named new Miami Heat head coach

Today, Erik Spoelstra was named the successor to Pat Riley as Head Coach of the Miami Heat. Currently, he is the youngest coach in the NBA. Spoelstra also becomes the sixth head coach in the Heat's franchise.
Spoelstra just completed his 13th season as a member of the HEAT staff and his seventh in the role of Assistant Coach/Director of Scouting where he had the primary role of developing game plans for upcoming opponents. Spoelstra was responsible for coordinating the video staff and advance scouts while also overseeing the development of scouting reports and videos. He has been in charge of the HEAT’s Individual Player Development Program and has served as the head coach of the HEAT’s summer league squad each of the past three summers.
He's got a lot of work ahead of him. We congratulate Erik on his promotion and wish him success next season.

Great prediction by "Balitang America" a year ago about Erik Spoelstra as head coach:

BTW - Erik Spoelstra is half-Filipino, a quarter Dutch, and a quarter Irish.

Jackie Chan joins WMA and wants Bollywood roles

Jackie Chan had a very busy weekend. On Friday, Jackie Chan fired his agent at CAA and joined the William Morris agency. Hopefully, we will see William Morris get some great roles for Jackie Chan. "Forbidden Kingdom" is still holding strong at the box office.

Also Jackie was in India over the weekend for launch of the soundtrack of Tamil film "Dasavathaaram". News organizations all over India are also reporting that Jackie Chan is interested in making a Bollywood film. India is the world's biggest market for movies with about a thousand movies made a year. It would definitely be interesting for Jackie Chan to be in a Bollywood film.

Although the quality is low, here's a clip of Jackie Chan's speech in India:

Brenda Song sues over escort ad

Brenda Song, star of Disney’s Suite Life of Zack & Cody, was pictured in an escort ad in the back of LA Weekly last week. A Disney rep told TMZ that "This is an unauthorized use of Brenda Song's image and her personal attorney has issued a cease and desist to the advertiser." Here's the ad:
The ad clearly tarnishes Brenda Song's image and the person that put the ad together can't spell. For the record, Brenda Song is not Hawaiian. She's half Hmong and half Thai.

As of Friday, Brenda Song has filed a lawsuit against Vibe Media for "illegally and shamelessly" using her picture for an escort service ad. She’s asking for $100,000 in damages. See the lawsuit at TMZ.com. We think Brenda should sue for more!!!

Harold and Kumar 2

"Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" marks the triumphant return of these two hilarious, slacker anti-heroes. The movie stars John Cho (Star Trek, American Pie) as Harold and Kal Penn (The Namesake, House, Van Wilder) as Kumar, two stoners who can't seem to get a break. Their last adventure found them traveling across country to find a White Castle hamburger in order to satisfy a weed-induced case of "the munchies."

This time, the boys get themselves in trouble trying to sneak a bong onboard a flight to Amsterdam. Now, being suspected of terrorism, they are forced to run from the law and try to find a way to prove their innocence. What follows is an irreverent and epic journey of deep thoughts, deeper inhaling and a wild trip around the world that is as "un-PC" as it gets. The movie will be released today April 25, 2008.

Karen David releases The Live Sessions EP

Karen David has both music and movies releaseing in 2008. This week was her release of her latest album "The Live Sessions". Her music fuses Eastern and Western music. Listen to some of her music and add Karen David as your Myspace friend.
The stylish singer, songwriter and actress may be this year’s hottest new thing, but Karen is no stranger to the world of showbiz. Handpicked by Bill Cosby to star alongside him in a TV commercial for Jell-O at the age of six, the multi-talented 26-year-old has spent her whole life doing what she does best: putting on dazzling performances to win admirers wherever she goes. Born in Shillong, at the foot of the Himalayas and raised in Toronto, Canada, by a half Chinese/Khasi mother and a father from Chennai, the ever-alluring Karen was never one to be confined by the expected boundaries.
You can catch her in "Batman Begins", she plays Court Reporter #1. She will also be in the upcoming film "The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian". Congrats to Karen David on her new release and new movies. BTW - April 15th was her birthday. Happy belated birthday, Karen David.

Here's the music video for "Alive", the theme song for last year's film "Provoked". The song was compsed by AR Rahman and sung by Karen David. Karen also had a small role in the film with Aishwarya Rai.

For nearly a century, people have turned to this prophetic dessert for advice, inspiration and even winning lottery combinations. While the fortune cookie has been a source of fascination and a Chinese cuisine staple in North America, it remains nearly non-existent in China. THE KILLING OF A CHINESE COOKIE examines the heated debate over the true origin of the fortune cookie, the mixing of eastern and western cultures that produced it, and the cookie’s rise from a simple pastry to a pop culture phenomenon.

Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival

Today is the Grand Parade for the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco. This will be the 41st year that the event is held. Each year, over 200,000 people attend this event showcasing the Japanese culture and the diversity of the Japanese American Community.
The parade begins at the Civic Center at 1:00p.m., proceeding up Polk to Post Street, and ending in Japantown at Post and Fillmore streets. A number of performers from Japan will also grace us with their presence. Japanese classical (Buyo) and folk dance (Minyo) groups representing the Bay Area will perform throughout the parade route like a myriad of floating butterflies.

World renowned San Francisco Taiko Dojo will keep the parade upbeat with the thundering sound of the taiko, and this year's Queen and her Court will cascade their way to Japantown. Anchoring the parade is the exciting Taru Mikoshi, that will be hoisted by over one hundred strong individuals from throughout the Bay Area. It is a spectacle not to be missed.

Dark Matter

Dark Matter, the feature film debut of renowned opera and theater director Chen Shi-Zheng, delves into the world of Liu Xing (Chinese for “Shooting Star”), a Chinese science student pursuing a Ph.D. in the United States in the early 1990s. Driven by ambition, yet unable to navigate academic politics, Liu Xing is inexorably pushed to the margins of American life, until he loses his way. The cast includes Liu Ye, Meryl Streep, and Aidan Quinn.

Dark Matter is loosely based on the 1991 University of Iowa school shootings. With the Virginia Tech shootings a year ago, the film's release was delayed. Controversy has surround the timing of the new release date, which was around the 1 year anniversary of the VA Tech shooting.

Despite the controversy, we need to find better ways to communicate. Both International and American students need to bridge the cultural divide and encourage mutual respect. With the rise in school campus violence in recent years, we need to foster better communication among students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

See the trailer for "Dark Matter" here:

The film won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize when screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. The award is given each year to a feature film that either focuses on science or technology or depicts a scientist, engineer, or mathematician as the main character.

Fruit Fly extras needed

CALL FOR EXTRAS! Have you ever wanted to be in the movies? If you have, you can be an extra in the upcoming musical "Fruit Fly".
We're seeking extras for our musical feature, Fruit Fly, by the makers of Colma: the Musical.

We're shooting this Saturday and Sunday - doing a song called "Public Transit" appropriately enough on Muni one day and BART the other day. We're looking for extras to play commuters on their way to work in the city. However, the fun part is that our extras actually get to be part of the performance - with some minor lip-syncing to the song and basic choreographed movement (not dance). So it's a chance to really perform in the film.

The shoot times are Saturday 4/19 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Muni downtown, or Sunday 4/20 from noon to 4 pm on BART.

Anyone interested can email our Associate Producer Krystel at krystelgapasin@yahoo.com. If possible, send a photo, contact number and day available.

Once you email Krystel more info will be emailed to you about the shoot.

fill in the bboy

It's Friday and we all need a break. We mashed a Planet B-boy trailer with Jin's new joint"Fill in the _______".

Planet B-boy is still circulating around the country. So far this film has earned about $140,860. His Planet B-boy videos were also featured on Youtube last week. Here's director Benson Lee talking about his film:

Jin's myspace page looks like is going in to reconstruction, but here's Jin freestylin' to his latest track. His next album release is expected sometime this year.

Boycott 21

Since its release on March 28th, 2008, '21' has been at the top of the U.S box office for the past 2 weeks and raked in over $46MM. This weekend will probably see '21' get dethroned as #1 in the box office. The main controversy for this film has been the "white-washing" of the lead roles.

"The main characters of Bringing Down the House are Jeff Ma and Mike Aponte, former real-life MIT students who are both Asian American men. Jeff Ma is played by Jim Sturgess, Mike Aponte is played by Jacob Pitts, and John Chang is played by Kevin Spacey."

Follow the controversy on this facebook page - Boycott 21

Here's a clip of the real life Jeff Ma:
In this video, Jeff answers the question "They cast a white actor for your part... doesn't that make you a race traitor?"

Here's a clip of the real life Mike "MIT Mike" Aponte

Another interesting group has also landed on facebook - Asians Not Brain-Washed By Media. The list of officers in this group reads like a who's who of Asian American entertainment. Join the group and spread the word.

Olympic Torch in San Francisco

Yesterday, the Olympics torch went through the only North American destination, San Francisco. Pro-China and pro-Tibet demonstrators lined up along the supposed torch route. However, last minute changes had the torch running a different route bypassing protesters and catching everyone off guard including the media. The torch's next stop is Argentina.

Here's another video

Here's some of the Asian Americans that were selected to carry the Olympic torch in San Francisco:

Chris Chui, 16      Alameda
Chris was stricken with infantile paralysis at age three. Track and field became Chris’ motivation to overcome his physical disabilities. He eventually became Captain of his high school team, he received the award for Most Outstanding Freshman/Sophomore Sprinter, and he went on to became a captain of a team-Relay For Life raising fund for American Cancer Society. Just as Chris’s grandfather brought a jar of soil to America from China, so Chris will carry the torch for all Chinese Americans and for all children with physical disabilities.

Anni Chung, 57      San Francisco
Anni has been the President & CEO of Self-Help for the Elderly since 1981 where she oversees and manages a community-based organization that provides a comprehensive range of health, educational, social and recreational services to over 25,000 seniors a year in San Francisco. Anni is participating on behalf of all of her clients and seniors throughout the Bay Area and across the country.

Edwin Lee, 55      San Francisco
As City Administrator, Ed has his hands on all the programs that make San Francisco a great symbol of diversity and strength to the world at large. Ed proudly represents all outstanding services and employees of this unique city, and he hopes that the Torch Relay will show off San Francisco at its very best.

Robin Luo, 21       San Leandro
For Robin, the Olympic torch represents hope. In 2006, she was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer and left school to get radiation and chemotherapy. Throughout her ordeal though, Robin always believed she would make it. And she did. She graduated from college a semester early. Every weekday, she runs 2 miles in the morning. She wants to bring hope to others. She wants to show them what a cancer survivor can accomplish.

Raj Mathai, 37      San Carlos
Two-time Emmy award winning Raj Mathai serves as sports director for NBC11. In 2004, the Associated Press honored him for Outstanding Sports Segment. He's also been awarded regional Emmys for Outstanding Sports Program in 2002 and 1998. Raj has reported on-location from the Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, Athens, Greece and Salt Lake City, Utah. Raj and his family contribute to cancer research, the Leukemia Society and various other Bay Area charities.

Rachel Tsao, 16       Moraga
Rachel is a high school student, who is making the world more sustainable by learning environmental science and applying what she has learned to make a difference. She has led a campaign to encourage used of compact fluorescent light bulbs in her neighborhood and her community. Rachel also has started a "Full Tire" program where volunteers fill up under inflated car tires on cars that stop at the local gas stations to improve gas mileage. By being an active environmentalist, Rachel speaks for the youth of her generation that will carry on the torch to a more sustainable Earth.

Helen Zia, 55      Oakland
Helen is a journalist and scholar who has covered Asian American communities and social and political movements for decades. Zia is former Executive Editor of Ms. Magazine. Her articles, essays and reviews have appeared in numerous publications, books and anthologies. A Magazine named her one of the most influential Asian Americans of the decade. She is the author of “Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People”, a finalist for the prestigious Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize. She was married to Lia Shigemura in San Francisco in 2004.

Here's why journalist and human rights activist Helen Zia wanted to carry the Olympic torch

channelAPA is launched

Comcast's AZN Television - The Network for Asian America sends its last broadcast signal at 12pm today. AZN R.I.P. (March 28, 2005 - April 9, 2008)

Although AZN is shutting down, channelAPA believes a market still exists to broadcast Asian American Entertainment. We are launching the same time the AZN is closing. This site is as an experiment building an Asian American "channel". While we don't have a huge war chest of funds (this site was started with less than $60), we can uncover new and exciting Asian American talent across the country with the help of the viewers of this site. In recent weeks, we have seen JabbaWockeeZ become America's Best Dance Crew and Cung Le become the Strikeforce middleweight champion. The time to build this "channel" is now. Strike while the iron is hot!

The concept is simple: every day we will try to post a video of interest to Asian Americans such as music, movies, and comedy. If you know of a video or have a video you want to promote, let us know. Email us at webmaster@channelapa.com

We got some motivation watching Guy Kawasaki's "Art of the Start" video

As we continue to grow, we hope to "make meaning" and "niche ourselves."
