Live “For the Moment” with Boombox Saints

Live “For the Moment” with the Boombox Saints

They’re fun, funky, and fashionable. I love that about men! They walk to the beat of their own drum, and yes, Boombox Saints create their music the same way.

The quartet, Freeky P, Adlib, Huggy Fresh, and DJ Relik, are fresh-to-def, sneaker fiends who carry a certain magnetism about them that goes beyond captivating….and they’ve got the skills to prove it. For a group that just dropped their debut album, Boombox Saints have already performed alongside the likes of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Far East Movement, Jay Electronica, and many more.

You can’t really pinpoint their sound because there are so many influences (Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop) to it, which are all blended together to create the tune of this group.

Yes, Boombox Saints, in their style and music, was born to stand out. Just check their debut album, “For The Moment”, and listen for yourself (It’s free, bro). Did I mention it just hit #1 on the National Top 10 Hip-Hop Chart in Canada?

They don’t need the money (well…that’s going a bit overboard), but they do it “for the love, for the hate, for the joy and the pain, for the rest of their lives, forever, for the moment”.

The guys of Boombox Saints….just who are these guys?

The name, Boombox Saints, is quite memorable. How did you guys come up with it?
Huggy Fresh: The name Boombox Saints is a spin off from the movie Boondock Saints where the movie revolves around 2 brothers who kill in the name of God, except what we’re killin’ is boring & whack music (laughs) jokes jokes, not really (haha)

I hear a tour is in the works. So with four men on the road, I suspect a lot of junk food, television, video games, and some great performances for the fans. Is the rumor of the tour true? If so, what do you have planned?
Freeky P: Hell yah it’s true and long over due. The plan is to tour across Canada and then go south of the boarder. Maybe Philippines before, all depends on our agents and how they weave our busy schedules together.

For the Moment album
You guys just dropped your debut album “For the Moment” for free because according to Freeky P, “We all know love pays the bills” (lol). I find it quite brilliant. You’re broadening support and gaining fans for the price of one debut album. Who was the mastermind behind that one?
Adlib: We just know how much more important it is to get the music out there, especially to first time listeners and who are we to charge people for our music when so many established artists are putting it out there for free. This album is really our first impression to the world so we got to make it as accessible as possible. Once you’ve had a listen, if you like it, then you have an option to buy it to show your support. Hopefully one day love will pay all the bills (laughs)

You seem like a quartet with a united love of sneakers (shoe game!), music, and style. How did all you kindred souls meet?
Huggy Fresh: Well what had happened was one day Adlib was breakdancing while Freeky P was beatboxing and it just so happened that DJ Relik was cuttin’ it up hard on the 1’s and 2’s…all the while I was taggin’ graffiti on the wall behind him…power went out, and turned back on, looked at each other and were all like…”Yo, this is hip hop…Adlib sing somethin’!” Believe me, there’s no way I could make that up!
*I’m giving them the side eye on this one….Hmmmmm….

Between the group, you have a sound infused with R&B, soul, and Hip-Hop. With all these different influences, I’m sure you feed off of one another. Who are your musical influences, and which member brings what sound to the table?
Huggy Fresh: We all grew up listening to pretty much the same genres of music, hip hop & R&B! We all pretty much bring our interpretation of what we got from those genres to the table. Freeky P brings that raw emcee skill mixed with the body romancing’, Adlib brings that sultry sound yet he raps too, and Huggy (myself) brings that rhythmic change up in delivery cuz just like love-makin’, you gotta switch it up when they least expect it.

Adlib: We all kind of grew up listening to all sorts of music, we all just bring our influences together and it comes out the way it does. We’re all different, but when we come together, it just works somehow. I’m just a big fan of the two of them, and they push me everyday musically and it allows me to excel at what I do, and I’m sure it works the other way around. We all just bring something unique to the table.

Freeky P: We all came up listening to R&B. Me, specifically I was into Jodeci, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, then later came into hip hop through the bad boy era when Puffy was infusing the two together. I’d like to think that’s where my influences have come from and that I try to transpire that into what we are doing today.

“For the Moment”, like any good music, relates to things that have happened in your lives. People can relate to it because it’s real. Care to tell the stories behind some of those songs? Your choice on the songs and tales, but I do enjoy a good laugh.

Adlib: We really put ourselves out there on this album. It’s some real sh*t! That’s why I think people can relate to it in some way or form. They may not necessarily have gone through the same thing but maybe along the lines of. As a listener, I always connected with songs I could relate with, just tryna do the same. Me personally, I can’t really write about something I don’t know of or been through. You can’t fake the funk! Anyways as far as stories behind the songs, that’s all left up to interpretation, as it should be. (laughs)

Boom Box Saints
I love the song, She Looks Like. From it, I know you guys like an independent woman, but, my sneaker fiends, what kind of kicks would she be rocking for you to do that double take, like Woah! ?

Huggy Fresh: For me personally I pay attention to detail, I have a huge respect for a female with a mean shoe game and it doesn’t have to be Jordans! A mean pair of heels, or open toes to notice her sexy pedicure yeah…Gahdamnit, that’s hot! Cuz let’s be honest, a lotta these girls runnin’ around sayin’ they’re sneaker heads or all about Jordans when they have less than 10 pairs to their name…it’s not swag and it’s not sexy. However I won’t knock you if you do BOOM BOOM

Adlib: She just has to have a kick ass personality! Ok just as long as she looks good in whatever shoes she wears, shit if she looks banging in a pair of Payless, then I’m about it.

Freeky P: Me, I like girls that don’t even wear shoes (laughs) and have nice feet. But mean heels or sandals, whatever, is cool. If she came out wearing some red bottoms that she paid for herself, then I would be impressed. Ormaybe some retarded Euro release Jordans then I would be like “gahdamn!”.

“For the Moment” was your debut album, which is a personal perspective of who you are and where you’ve been. From here, what do guys think the personal message in your music will be? Ultimately, what does Boombox Saints hope to voice to the masses?

Huggy Fresh: We hope to inspire and motivate those who relate to our experiences to chase their dream! It doesn’t have to be music related at all. If it is, then great. If not, then a lane that every wants to drive down. Also, just to have a good time with it, cuz if our fans are havin’ fun then you better believe we’re havin’ 10 times as much fun, poppin’ bottles, and wildin’ out!

Any last words?
Huggy Fresh: Last words? Take your left hand and make an L with your palm facing towards you, now take your right hand and do the same thing except your palm facing the opposite direction, now make the shape of a box! When you see us in the streets, throw that box up and yell out “BooooooomBox!!!” And when you do that, we’re definitely partyin’ cuz that’s love roite thayurr homie! EVERYBODY SAY BOOOOOOMBOX!

Adlib: Go download the album now! And share it with at least 10 people! www.boomboxsaints.com

Freeky P: Like what??? As if I was dying??? Naw. lol…Hi Mom!!!!!

Note to self: I’ll consider re-wording that question next time. Thanks Freeky P.

Throw your boomboxes up!

A One-on-One with Jin and “LINsanity”

A One-on-One with Jin and LINsanity
It’s Lin-sanity!!! Jeremy Lin has had an amazing season so far and everyone has caught the fever. In a great tribute, one Asian superstar recognizes another as Jin recently released Nick of Time, a song praising the Knicks player’s faith in God. Check out the inspiration behind this song and what motivated Jin to Lin-sanity as we chat one-on-one with the rapper.

What inspired the Jeremy Lin song? Was it mainly the Asian-American bond?
It was a combination of things. The natural connection would, of course, be the Asian American experience as well as the challenge of facing new territory in our respective career paths, but it wasn’t necessarily these aspects that lead me to write the song. I saw an interview of Jeremy’s sometime late last year on Patheos.com where he was specifically sharing his faith and how it plays a role in both his career and outlook in life. As I was chartering into new ground on my own spiritual journey, this interview should be considered the true inspiration behind the song. If you listen to the song, it’s not so much a Jeremy Lin tribute per se. [It’s] more so, how his faith has played a role in his trials and tribulations.

Nick of Time

Tell me about your spiritual path. What changes have you seen within yourself and in your life since you found God.
For me personally, the transformation that I’ve felt and seen couldn’t be confined to a paragraph answer in this interview. It’s really so much more intense and thorough. If I had to describe it one sentence, I’d say it’s been a 180-degree turnaround. Obviously, I am still a work in progress as I am learning more about God and myself as each second goes by on a daily basis. For your reference, I would recommend you check out this interview from last year here.

Are the Knicks your favorite b-ball team?
I have to be brutally honest. No, they are not. Let me rephrase that. I don’t think I’ve had a “Favorite Basketball” team since I was 14-15… that was the mid 90’s Chicago Bulls. Jordan, Pippen and the gang.
Of course, being born and raised in Miami I was extremely happy when they won a ring years ago with Shaq and Wade. Let’s put it like this, I’ve never had a dislike for the Knicks, yet I’ve never rooted for them in such a manner as I am now either.

Have you made plans to come to NY and catch Jeremy Lin in action?
I’ve been to one Knick game so far.. two years ago at the Garden. The next time I will be watching a game at the Garden they’ll be playing the Pacers. Looking forward to see Jeremy in action of course. Honestly, I’m more excited to see Novak raining threes.

As an Asian-American who has, almost overnight, been thrown in the spotlight, what words of wisdom do you have for Jeremy Lin?
Let God lead the way. Any other plan is bound to be flawed. The beauty of this is, he would be the first to agree.

Will there be a remix or part two to your tribute? Can we expect more sports-themed songs?
Doin’ The Landry!

There’s no denying K-Pop is growing. With a vast number of groups out there, the power of the internet has also led to their global appeal.

One group in particular just wrapped up a show at Madison Square Garden (NYC, Baby!). They go by the name of Girls Generation. As a nine-member all-girl group, they’re no rookies to the game. These talented ladies have already shot up the charts in Asia.

Now looking for history to repeat, they’ve set their sights to dominate the charts in the U.S.….and they’re already up to a great start. Teaming up with the legendary Teddy Riley, their first English single “The Boys” was just released.

Formula DRIFT: A Championship Sport

“There’s no right or wrong in drifting. How you drift is who you are. It’s like fingerprints. Everyone’s different.” Movies, such as Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, popularized it. The Japanese created it and now, the unique drivers of Formula DRIFT are showing us how rear-wheel driving, losing traction, and over-steering is done. For the first time in eight seasons of competition, Formula DRIFT Pro Championship came to Florida for Round 3: Invasion. They had to. There was just too much demand for the sport. And it’s not just the people who recognize drifting. Some of their sponsors include Mazda, NOS Energy Drink, Import Tuner, and Falken Tire (because drifters can never have enough tires).

If you thought drifting looked good before, it’s on a whole other level seeing it for yourself. Tires are screeching, smoke is everywhere, walls are being clipped and as in all sports: the faster, the better. Needless to say, meeting one of these amazing drivers was not an option – it was a necessity. Currently in third place overall in the competition is Daijiro Yoshihara, who was then on his way to judge a Formula DRIFT international event in Singapore. One can probably tell from his name alone that he comes from the land where drifting was born.

Yoshihara explains, “I’ve seen drifting on the canyon roads of Japan and I thought it looked super-fun to do. Once I got my license, I started drifting on the canyon.” So what does one drive on a mountain road? “It was a 1986 Toyota Corolla (known in Japan as the AE86). It was so cheap, $200, and drift-ready! Of course, it was in bad condition, but good enough for me to learn drifting in. That was right before the Anime, Initial D (a cartoon that featured drifting), got popular.

So does drifting have a bright future? Or is it a fad, like the spinning rims?

Probably the first. “We’ve already been doing it worldwide. We have the Formula Drift Asia Series, with four rounds in four different countries. Also, the exhibition events have been held in Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Panama.” Who would have thought a creation in the mountains of Japan would gain such fame? With competitions, such as Formula DRIFT, and drivers, such as Daijiro Yoshihara, leading the way, there is a good chance of this sport gaining even more recognition than it has right now. So what is it about drifting that has us wanting more? In the words of Keiichi Tsuchiya, better known the [real] “Drift King”, “I drift not because it is a quicker way around a corner but the most exciting way”. Well, who can argue with that?

The Perspective of a Tiger Mother’s Child

“The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education.” Albert Einstein’s words say a lot about this society. Well, we do call the man brilliant for a reason. He speaks the truth, especially in the world of Asians/Asian-Americans.

It’s true that a major factor of being raised an Asian household is to not only get good grades, but to receive the top scores. However, being book-smart, being able to regurgitate from a textbook does not ensure your success in the future. Life isn’t about what comes out of a book. There is no cheat sheet to finding your passion and taking risks to achieve your dream.

Psychologists have argued that it is important for you to de-focus as it allows the mind to truly think creatively with clarity. And this is where the problem lies. Studying so hard inevitably gets in the way of other things, such as a social life. There is no real time to deactivate from your focused intelligence. How can one think creatively that way? Even more so, how can you truly find and experience what it is you love in life without being able to release….or rebel?

I only say rebel because that comes from my experience. I would have never discovered my love of music or writing if I hadn’t taken my nose out of those books and snuck out to those concerts, b-boy battles, street races…you get the idea (sorry, Mom!). I could have the best writing education in the world. What is it worth if I don’t have a story to tell?

And in today’s society, I would be considered a highly-educated person (degrees stacked up on them walls!), but the truth of the matter is I did that for my parents. My love of hip hop and writing did not require the extent of schooling that I went through. My knowledge of textbooks did nothing to help me in the industry I so desired to be a part of.

Despite all the opportunities in my journey, Einstein’s words hold a lot of weight. I do find times that my education does hinder me from a kinship with others. I work in a world where experience speaks louder than schooling. It’s about your grind, not your resume. And because I formerly lived in a world of academia, there are moments I get too technical with details and people look at me sideways, not because they’re not intelligent but because it isn’t necessary. Yet, and this is hard for me to admit, a small voice in the back of my mind is glad that I got those degrees just in case my dream (gasp!) didn’t come true. However, I know that I am not alone.

The fear may not be there for some. However, in many cases, including Quest Crew member Victor Kim, getting a college degree is something to obtain for your parents. Singer, Joseph Vincent, graduated this past semester and now, signed to Catch Adventures, he will pursue his career as a singer. Let’s face it – that piece of paper will always be there.

Why Chinese Mothers are Superior”, an article published in the Wall Street Journal earlier this year, created quite a stir, but would it have done so if there wasn’t any truth to it? Yes, it’s a stereotype, but many Asian kids are known to study hard, get those grades, and follow their parents’ wishes. WSJ states, “A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids.” But I have to wonder what exactly they mean by “successful”. Does that mean they have good jobs?

Because my definition of success is different – it means living out a dream and being truly happy in a career they chose. This leads me to question, and maybe even challenge, if pushing kids towards a particular path is truly the right thing, especially when it happens to an insatiable music lover who would rather not be an engineer or a talented dancer whose preference is not to live in the suit-and-tie world.

But does our education hinder that? After all our “gold stars” and “straight-A’s”, does it make us feel fearful to make a mistake, take a risk, or chase an opportunity where the outcome is unknown?

What is the underlying fear that makes some of us not even take that risk? Disappointing people? Because the only one who has to live with our mistakes is us. And I’d rather know I took that chance to live my dream than play it safe and never try.

As Jin told us, “Make sure you shoot for the moon so you can land on the stars.”
It’s a good place to be.

Jonas Bevacqua – Founder of LRG: Death is Still a Mystery

Jonas Bevacqua – Founder of LRG: Death is Still a Mystery

LRG, Lifted Research Group, started in 1999 with some start-up capital and a dream. Fast forward to the present. The small company founded by Jonas Bevacqua and Robert Wright is now a fixture in the fashion and urban scene. Annual sales in 2006 were projected to be more than $150 million.

Now, the dream has ended too soon and a life has ended too young when earlier this week, 34 year-old Jonas Bevacqua was found dead in his Laguna Beach home. An autopsy could not immediately determine his cause of death. Additional test results will
take weeks. Though the cause of his death is undetermined, his life was an inspiration. As part of a family with eight siblings (seven, including Jonas, adopted), he undoubtedly grew up with struggles. From there, Jonas Bevacqua took LRG to become on one of the most popular and recognized street wear in the hip hop and fashion culture, paving the way for so many today. From clothing, the company branched out as a “creative lifestyle” corporation to include electronics, music, and skateboarding.

And as everyone who makes it should do (but only a select few do), they never lost sight of where they came from, supporting underground artists and staying true to who they were. In the 2009 Register interview, “Bevacqua described a passionate but casual work ethic that he said drives LRG, who headquarters includes a basketball court.”

It’s sad to see such a talent and visionary from the Asian-American community come to such an abrupt end. He will truly be missed and remain an inspiration to many.
