ACDC Crew : the Battle is over, but the WAR is not.

It's been about a week since the The Biggest Online Dance Battle in YouTube History went primetime. ACDC and Invisible Children have been paired up from the beginning to help raise awareness and money for the forgotten kids of Northern Uganda. So far, through the ACDC TShirt sales, they have made over $50,000 dollars for the charity. Now it's Miley and Mandy's turn!
They challenge Miley and Mandy to put their M&M Cru tshirts on sale online and throw 100% of the profits to whatever charity they choose.
They believe dance can change the world. And since this battle has begun, and the tshirts started to sell, they have been. More kids are getting educated, more kids have books, dorms, clean water because of YOU guys and girls!!
The battle is over, but the war wages on.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more updates...

Junior Jabbawockeez

We posted a video of Lil Demon for the ACDC Crew a few days ago. We stumble across a pair of kids, Josh (11 yrs) & Jeremiah (7 yrs,) mimicing the Jabbawockeez MJ's PYT on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew. They practiced all the moves by watching it on YouTube. Apparently, they learned the whole routine in less than 24 hours. These Junior Jabbawockeez have no professional dance training.

Step Up 2 DVD release

Step Up 2 isn't the The Biggest Dance Battle in Youtube History, it's the directorial debut of Jon M. Chu. The 2004 USC graduate recruited dancers off of YouTube and MySpace to be part of Step Up 2. (One of those dancers is Adam Sevani aka Moose. Without Adam, the ACDC Crew would not have been created.) Jabbawockeez was also in the film before they won America's Best Dance Crew. The rain sequence in the movie is also Jon M Chu's idea inspired from "Dancing in the Rain."
Here's the synopsis for Step Up 2
"Step Up 2 the Streets" is the follow-up to the smash hit "Step Up," which ignited theaters in August 2006. When rebellious street dancer Andie (Briana Evigan) lands at the elite Maryland School of the Arts, she finds herself fighting to fit in while also trying to hold onto her old life. When she joins forces with the school's hottest dancer Chase (Robert Hoffman) to form a crew of classmate outcasts to compete in Baltimore's underground dance battle The Streets, she ultimately finds a way to live her dream while building a bridge between her two separate worlds.
Featuring the directorial debut of award-winning up-and-comer Jon M. Chu, "Step Up 2 the Streets" reunites much of the production team behind the original film including "Step Up's" cutting-edge hip-hop choreographer Jamal Sims, who is joined this time by choreographers Hi-Hat ("hip-hop's high diva of dance") and Dave Scott ("Stomp the Yard").

So You Think You Can Dance - Bollywood Edition

Earlier this week, So You Think You Can Dance had the show's first Bollywood routine. Katee Shean and Joshua Allen got the dance selection after picking it from a hat. Although there were many skeptical people, the pair walked away with the best performance of the night. They danced to "Dhoom Taana" from the "Om Shanti Om" with choreography by Nakul Dev Mahajan. (Bollywood dance routines are very difficult.) This routine will go down as one of the season's most memorable and will definitely end up on the tour. BTW - Nigel Lythgoe has tried to get a Bollywood routine on the show for 3 years.

Jabbawockeez Drama on the East Coast
UPDATE: One of our bloggers didn't get all the facts right on this post. Apologies to SCAT Productions as their flyer did state their cause in small print on their flyer. Also three members of Jabbawockeez (Kevin Brewer, Phil Tayag and Chris Gatdula ) showed up towards the end of the "Rebuilding the Bridge" event to say some words on stage to support the Sichuan Quake event. They ended up staying for a meet & greet, took photos, signed autographs and passed out T-shirts. Jabbawockeez took care of their fans and the cause. Here's some fan footage when Jabbawockeez got announced.

Lots of drama surrounding the booking of Jabbawockeez performances on the East Coast this weekend for July 12th. Apparently, the Jabbawockeez were booked by both SCAT Productions and Rebuilding the Bridge (an event helping the China Quake Victims). For July 12th, SCAT Productions got the Jabbawockeez, while Rebuilding the Bridge lost their top act with days before the event.
On the "Rebuilding the Bridge" site, this message appears:
Due to unforeseen conflicts in scheduling, the Jabbawockeez are no longer part of the lineup for this event. On behalf of all the individuals and organizations involved, we are deeply sorry for this development. We are nonetheless extremely excited by the roster of artists who are performing.
On the Jabbwockeez website, the SCAT Productions event is being promoted. (It's going to be tough for the "Rebuilding the Bridge" event to re-promote without their top draw.) The Ningin.com message boards lit up for awhile on the Jabbawockeez controversy until the thread was taken offline. Ningin.com is a backer of the "Rebuilding the Bridge" event.
Miss Info of Hot 97 in NYC, who is supporting the "Rebuilding the Bridge" event, voiced her concerns on her blog here and here.
...a disturbing tale of what happens when you have the wrong people repping you and claiming to be out to “do good in the hood."...
...But while some fans are putting the entertainment over the mission, which I cant respect, much love to all the folks who are support this 100% non-profit event (to one of the largest aid organizations in the world, Mercy Corps….not an unlicensed undocumented charity). I am doing everything I can to make sure you’ll be more than happy...
When you read between the lines on what is going on here, money is clearly a factor. If you take a look at how the marketing was done for the events. SCAT Productions flyers say nothing about the charity they support, only on their website. "Rebuilding the Bridge" flyers clearly state the charity they support. While not all the information is out in the open, the nasty truth will come out sooner or later. Bottom line, it's the charity that matters. Bypass all the drama and contribute directly to the cause you want - donate to Mercy Corps or Children's Chance in Connecticut.
The promo video got taken down for the "Rebuilding the Bridge" event. However, you can still hear the PSA by Amy Chang - Remember the Jabbawockeez will not be at this event.

Shockers - all-male cheerleading team

The Wall Street Journal wrote an article about the all-male Japanese cheerleading group Shockers. The 24-member Shockers squad defeated 14 all-female teams to win a national cheerleading competition in Japan a few months ago.
The Shockers team focuses on moves that take advantage of their physical strength. In one, several men form a tight circle and together toss a smaller teammate four or five meters in the air, catching him just before he hits the ground. A still showier move is the "Scorpion," in which three members hold up a fourth, who stands on one leg and extends the other leg behind his head -- similar to the Biellmann spin position in figure skating. Only two team members can pull that off, though.
Maybe we will see the group in one of the plethora of dance shows broadcasting on TV.

The Mikado Project Goes From Stage To Film

"The Mikado Project," a feature film directed by Chil Kong is currently in production and shooting in Los Angeles. (Over the weekend, the opening night of the show was shot.) The musical comedy (based on the stage performance written by Ken Narasaki and Doris Baizley and adapted for film by Chil Kong), tells the story of a struggling Asian American theater company that in a desperate publicity stunt to save their company decides to produce a modern reconstruction of Gilbert and Sullivan's, "The Mikado."
"The Mikado," one of the most beloved comedy operas by legendary collaborators, Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert, first opened on stage in 1885 in London. The story was set in Japan (considered an exotic land to the British during that era) which allowed Gilbert & Sullivan to satirize British politics. However, by doing so, Asians around the world and Asian Americans today have found this opera hard to embrace—making the notion of Asian American actors performing "The Mikado" controversial and palatable only through a comedic reconstruction.
The story begins with the news that The Angry Buddha Theater Ensemble, has lost its leading male actor, Jace (David McInnis, "Never Forever"), to a primetime gig on TV. Without Jace's star power the company faces imminent demise. Lead by Lance (Allen Liu, "Flower Drum Song"), a scrappy artistic director secretly living out of the back office of the theater, the members of the group fight over the idea of putting on "The Mikado," which to some in the company is the equivalent of reviving "Charlie Chan" or "Kung Fu".
"We are using the story of this Asian American theater company in the same way Gilbert & Sullivan used a Japanese story to comment on their society," says producer Quan Phung. "Hopefully, we can laugh at ourselves while shedding light on the challenges facing Asian American actors or any actor of color in Hollywood today."
We see the conflict most vividly through the eyes of three women in the troupe: Viola (Tamlyn Tomita, "The Eye"), a veteran finding her way in a young actor's world; Cheryl (Erin Quill, "Avenue Q") a half-Irish, half-Chinese, feisty actress whose indignation masks her insecurities about being a lead; and Yuri (Yuri Tag, Kaba Modern on MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew") who is young, naïve, and oblivious to any negative connotations from art or life. These three women guide the story through their experiences as Asian American women in Hollywood and along the way we are given a window into the lives of the other members of the theater company and provided a glimpse into what binds them to the company. Through it all, they learn that what it all means is that they are not just a group of misfits, but a family.
"This story came out of my very own personal experience in the Asian American artist," says director Chil Kong. "I am the artistic director of an Asian American theater company called Lodestone, based in LA, and we went through 10 years of introspection about the landscape of Asian Americans in arts and cinema. The one thing I know for sure is that history is evolving and my goal is to create a really good and entertaining story. For me, a musical comedy was the best way to go to address anything we had to say about being Asian Americans or 'The Mikado.'"
The most notable component of the film that audiences won't be able to see but will certainly hear, are the new hip-hopera versions of the Gilbert & Sullivan's musical compositions—outstanding beat box and rap mixes. The dance numbers are choreographed by members of the dance troupes, Kaba Modern and Jabbawockeez, from Randy Jackson's hit show on MTV, "America's Best Dance Crew," giving the movie a whole new identity to an old operetta.

Return of the Bgirl by Masia One featured on YouTube

Over the past few months there have been lots of buzz about b-boys ( Planet B-boy, Alwayz Be Boyz, Hype Nation), but what about the b-girls? Take a peek into the b-girl culture with Return of the Bgirl by Masia One. It's featured on YouTube today. This Asian female rapper has got some mad skillz along with the b-girls in the video too!! Here's more about Masia One.
Masia One was born in Singapore, grew up in Vancouver BC and moved to Toronto. She discovered Hip hop culture as a young girl in Singapore after stumbling upon a bootleg version of a Public Enemy Tape in a marketplace. In her formative years, she dabbled in all elements of Hip hop culture including graffiti and break dancing but her accomplishments lie as an emcee.
In 2003 she started her own record label, The M1 Group and debut her first album, Mississauga. In a short time span, the M1 Group released 3 videos that gained national airplay to correspond with the album including the Much Music Video Award nominated Split Second Time. This marked the first time a female has been nominated for this award in the category of Hip hop.
Masia One is currently finishing her sophomore release. PULAU (The Islands) will debut Spring 2008. Following a trip back to Singapore early 2006, Masia One was reminded and inspired by the island of her birth. This visit was followed by a journey to various islands internationally including Malaysia, Indonesia, Hawaii, Japan and Jamaica, solidifying the new album concept. PULAU promises to pay tribute to both her Canadian and South East Asian heritage as well as explore the influences of her new found musical environments. With a solid team of producers and collaborators, Masia One is set to once again push the boundaries of Hip hop and will continue to set a new standard for independent artists in the music industry.
