Shanghai Restoration Project on NPR

Traditional Chinese instruments meet Hip-Hop & Electronica.

An experiment in cross-cultural soundscapes, The Shanghai Restoration Project draws its creative inspiration from the old 1930s Shanghai jazz bands, an early combination of East and West that's become an international legend. The Project revives this exotic blend by introducing Eastern instruments and rhythms to the Western sounds of hip-hop, jazz, and electronica.

NPR asked Liang to explain how he went about reflecting the musical landscape of Shanghai, as heard on the latest Shanghai Restoration Project album, Instrumentals: Day-Night. Listen to the interview Shanghai Restoration Project: Hybrid Backbeats.

Producer Dave Liang has worked with artists on Bad Boy, Motown, and Universal Records. His music has been featured in films such as "Red Doors" (Winner TriBeCa Film Festival '05), on tastemaker radio stations such as KCRW and NPR, and in clubs and lounges the world over.

Cooking Bamboo Shoots with Joi Ito

Boing Boing tv takes you with Joi Ito to cook up some delicious takenoko (竹の子), young bamboo shoots. You may know Joi Ito as a serial entrepreneur, a twittering globetrotter VC, a World of Warcraft junkie, or the CEO of Creative Commons, but he has a more traditional side, too.,br>
In this video, Joi Ito welcomes us into his back yard in Japan, where he and his partner Mizuka teach us how to hunt for and prepare this traditional seasonal delicacy from a lush bamboo forest. The episode is accompanied by an original score composed by Grammy, Academy Award, and Golden Globe-winning composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Watch Cooking Bamboo Shoots with Joi Ito

Here's the recipe for TAKENOKO (Young Bamboo Shoots):
--------------------

How to slice:

Cut tip of takenoko at an angle. Cut vertical to down middle to front.

"Akunuki" process to remove bitter taste:

In a large boiling pot add:

* Dried Chili X 3
* Rice "Nuka" husks 2 handfuls

Cold water 2 liters

Add takenoko with the cuts and husks. Full heat from water for approximately 20-40 min (until you can stick a chopstick into the takenoko). Lower heat as it comes to a boil. After completed, cut heat and leave over night.

The next day, remove husks and cut to smaller pieces and boil for 10 min.
Making "Wakatakeni":

Make 2 cups stock from "Kobu" (seaweed) and "Katsuo" (Bonito flakes). Add Thin Soy Sauce - 3 table spoon, Sugar - table spoon, Sake - 2 table spoon. Add takenoko and boil for 8 min. Add "Wakame" (seaweed) and boil for additional 2 min.

Top with "Kinome" (Japanese herb) and eat as it is OR

Make Takenoko rice:

Make stewed Takenoko above but use "Oage" (dried tofu) instead of "Wakame". Take the sauce from Wakatakeni" and add as flavor to rice in a rice cooker and prepare rice normally. After rice is done, add the stewed takenoko and oage and mix. Enjoy.

Note: "cups" are Japanese size cups which are 200ml or 200cc.

Remembering Bruce Lee

Actor and martial arts legend Bruce Lee was remembered this past weekend all around the world. Fans marked the 35th anniversary of the death of Bruce Lee, who died July 20, 1973 at the age of 32 from swelling of the brain.

From Hong Kong to the USA, fans remembered Bruce Lee in their own way. In Hong Kong, where Lee grew up, an exhibit opened Friday featuring 800 items about the late action star, including movie posters, magazine covers and books. Headlining the opening ceremony was Danny Chan, who plays Lee in the China Central Television series "Legend of Bruce Lee". Also Hong Kong fans are trying to convert his HK residence from a by-the-hour love motel into a 25,000-square-foot museum, complete with library, cinema and martial arts center.

In Seattle, discussions are developing about building a three story $50 million Bruce Lee Action Museum. Why Seattle? Although Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco and lived in Hong Kong, he moved to Seattle after family friends, Ping and Ruby Chow, said he could work at their restaurant. While in Seattle, he trained in Chinatown and studied philosophy at the University of Washington. He also took classes with Linda Emery, who eventually became his wife. Their first date was at the Space Needle restaurant. The two were married on Aug. 17, 1964 at the Seattle Congregational Church. Seattle holds a lot of memories for the rest of the Lee's family.

Tony Hsieh CEO of Zappos.com

Zappos and its CEO Tony Hsieh were profiled on ABC. Zappos, if you don't know, is an online shoe store with over 1,000 brands and 4 million pairs of shoes. (If you were wondering, the name Zappos is an adaptation of the Spanish word for "shoe.") The nine year old company is on track to sell $1 billion in shoes. (That's a whole lotta shoes.) Headquartered in Las Vegas, the company prides itself on its company culture and customer service.

The company culture starts at the top with the CEO. Tony Hsieh makes about $36k a year. (Don't worry about his pay. He sold LinkExchange in the dot com days to Microsoft for about $250 Million.) Watching the video you will see that employees work hard and have fun at the same time. (It's like Tony transported some of the glory day of Internet startups to Vegas. There are free food and snacks. (Remember those days.) And 100% of medial and dental are paid for by the company.

This company culture is exemplified in Zappos customer service - Free shipping both ways with a 365-day return policy. (At our office, we see Zappos boxes all the time.) While 95% of the business is online, Zappos customer service is trained thoroughly to support any calls that come in. Here's the Zappos.com Core Values:
1. Deliver WOW Through Service
2. Embrace and Drive Change
3. Create Fun and A Little Weirdness
4. Be Adventurous, Creative, and Open-Minded
5. Pursue Growth and Learning
6. Build Open and Honest Relationships With Communication
7. Build a Positive Team and Family Spirit
8. Do More With Less
9. Be Passionate and Determined
10. Be Humble

These core values and customer service is part of the Zappos brand and that has driven customer loyalty. If you don't believe that, take a look at the revenue growth at Zappos:

1999: Almost nothing
2000: $ 1.6 mm
2001: $ 8.6 mm
2002: $ 32 mm
2003: $ 70 mm
2004: $184 mm
2005: $370 mm
2006: $597 mm
2007: $850 mm
2008: $1 billion+

While their foundation is shoes, Zappos has since branched off to handbags, clothing, eyewear, watches, accessories, and possibly even airlines. You can experience Zappos firsthand, shop at Zappos.com

Miss Washington Elyse Umemoto Photo Scandal

TMZ posted some unflattering photos of Miss Washington 2007 - Elyse Umemoto. Among the photos posted include the pageant winner flipping off the camera while wearing her crown, drinking and playing what appears to be beer pong, and making obscene sexual gestures. Running on a platform to promote diversity and women's empowerment, Elyse Umemoto was also the second runner-up in this year's Miss America pageant.

While her scandal is not as big as Miss Nevada's, the Miss Washington Scholarship Organization is embarrassed by the pictures. Quick reaction also by Elyse Umemoto. She held a press conference in Tacoma, Washington the same day the scandal broke. In her apology, she says that someone she trusted stole the photos from her, she's not proud of how she was depicted, and that being a public figure and role model is a full-time job. (We think Elyse Umemoto has learned her lesson.)

Dennis Hwang the Google Doodler

Dennis Hwang, aka Hwang Jeong-mok, is probably the most famous unknown artist in the world. He started as an intern at Google in the summer of 2000. At the time, he was a Stanford undergrad majoring in art and computer science. When founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin found out he was an art major, they tapped him to do his first doodle. (Bastille Day, July 14, 2000 - see above). He's been making whimsical logos for Google's homepage ever since.

While the doodles are only a small part of his actual job, Hwang's favorite doodles are the birthday series honoring Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh and other famous artists. You can see list of past logos here. BTW, next time try clicking on the Google Doodle, the doodled logos link to Google search results about that topic.

Here's Dennis Hwang showing you how a Google Doodle is made

Here's some example of Google Doodles over the years

Earlier this year K-12 students were invited to Doodle 4 Google. The winner was Grace Moon with a doodle entitle "Up in the Clouds".

VC Tim Chang talks Internet & Hollywood

Tim Chang is a Principal Partner at NorWest Venture Partners. Tim holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar, and an MS in electrical engineering/system engineering as well as a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. He focuses on investments in wireless and digital media as well as business development initiatives in Asia-Pacific.

In this interview, he covers the changing shifts between Hollywood and Silicon Valley (can you say Hollywood 2.0?). With MySpace and Yahoo! in Los Angeles as well as the amount of money in Hollywood and number of celebrities, it only a matter of time when you see more entrepreneurs coming out of Hollywood. It's already starting with weplay.com and ibeatyou.com. He also covers why an ad-support model is a lazy entrepreneurs business model. (Read: you need to sell stuff). Guitar Hero creators Kai and Charles Huang

Guitar Hero, created by Kai Huang and Charles Huang, has redefined the rhythm game genre. Kai Huang is the man widely lauded as the person who thought up the idea for the Guitar Hero game. The Huang brothers are co-founders of RedOctane. (Before Guitar Hero, the company was known for DDR dance pads.)

The original Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II was a collaboration between Red Octane and Harmonix Music Systems. The success for Guitar Hero immediately took off. Miley Cyrus, My Chemical Romance, and Korn are known to be fans of Guitar Hero. In 2006, things changed for the two companies. Harmonix Music Systems was bought out by MTV Networks and went on to create rival game "Rock Band." Meanwhile, Red Octane was acquired by Activision and continued the franchise with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

The Guitar hero brand continues with the recently released Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS. Guitar Hero: Metallica will be available in 2009. Also expected later this year is Guitar Hero World Tour (formerly known as Guitar Hero IV). This game is expected to rival Rock Band with a drum set with cymbal interfaces and Guitar Hero Studio, where you can create your own music.

Esther Ku was interviewed on NPR's Talk of the Nation on the program It Ain't Easy Getting to the Top. (This interview was before Esther Ku became a finalist on Last Comic Standing.) Here's some of the highlights from the interview: She's spent about 4 years in comedy and would like to do comedy full time. She is also a regular at some comedy clubs in NYC. From listening to the interview, it doesn't seem that her exposure on network TV is translating to job offers yet. Esther still needs to work part time in a dental office to supplement her income.

Aaron Yoo in The Wackness

Korean American actor Aaron Yoo can be seen in The Wackness. He plays the role of Justin. Justin (Aaron Yoo) is a mutual friend of Luke (Josh Peck) and Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby) and introduced them to each other. He leads the couple on a relationship roller coaster.

Here's s synopsis of The Wackness.
It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana--but change is in the air. The newly-inaugurated mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against "crimes" like noisy portable radios, graffiti and public drunkenness. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy, while crushing on his step-daughter (Olivia Thirlby). Famke Janssen, Mary Kate Olsen, and Method Man round out the cast in this edgy, bittersweet, and funny coming of age story.

The Wackness opens this weekend in New York and Los Angeles. Over the month of July, the film slowly rolls out nationwide.

A Shot at Love 2 finale

Tila Tequila was not happy with the outcome of the "A Shot at Love 2" finale. Tila selected Kristy Morgan only to have Kristy break her heart in the end. Kristy admits that she's not ready to take on everything that key represents. A tearful Tila can't believe that she's had her heart broken...again and wonders why week after week Kristy Morgan kept accepting the key if she was not ready for love. Tila retires to her bedroom to contemplate why she keeps offering up her heart only to have people reject it.

Watch the full final episode of A Shot at Love 2.

Although some people think that the rejection makes way for "A shot at Love 3", Tila Tequila's post says otherwise "THERE IS NO SEASON 3! OVERRRR IT! THANKS...."

Based on Tial Tequila's MySpace blog post, she is still pissed off.
BITCHES AIN’T SH*T BUT HOES AND TRICKS!

Thunderf*ck my mouth is shut. Been a while, feel like a c*nt.
Can't wait for this drama to pass.
Oh the joy.....f*ck you. My ass.
Live a lie.
Tell my mind.
Over soon. I can't deny.
You will all soon see, the truth in my eyes.

Smile on my face, the loving embrace....but instead I'll punch you in the face. For a long time coming....I let you touch me....now that it's over bitch....You better start running. Pent up inside....telling these lies....this has gone too far.....the world will soon die.

Only 1 more day. To feel this way. Tomorrow I smile....brings another day!
Back to myself. Nobody else. F*ck all this bullsh*t. I'm back to myself. Yes. Thank the f*ck God.

Well, I could spend hours pontificating on why this land-locked nation is one of the most fascinating and misunderstood places on earth. And we could discuss the fact that many of us have committed incest in our lives due to the recent scientific discovery that much of Asia's population's ancestry can be traced back to just one man, Genghis Khan. Oh yes, think twice before you get naughty with your significant other...you might just be making love to your sister. Tiger Woods won his 14th major championship on 91st hole of the US Open. (Not bad for someone returning from knee surgery.) He is now just 4 wins behind Jack Nicklaus' record for major championships. Rocco Mediate had several opportunities to close out Tiger Woods, but failed to do so. Tiger Woods had a lots of ups and downs during the whole tournament. Hopefully, he takes the time to rest the knee before his next tournament. It's great to see Tiger back on the green.
