Asian YouTubers Get That Look

JC Penney created a back to school marketing campaign entitled "Get That Look". With a theme of "The Breakfast Club" - one of pop culture's ultimate teen movies that is currently experiencing a resurgence among today's youth - the campaign highlights the array of lifestyle brands available at JC Penney. Created with Saatchi & Saatchi New York, the campaign features both traditional and non-traditional media components. The mainstream campaign can be found here.

What's interesting with this campaign is that the grassroots online version of "Get That Look" has college age Asian American Youtubers as spokespeople. Among the four Asian American used include Kina Grannis (HAPA - Japanese), David Choi (Korean), Natalie (Filipino), and Kevjumba (Chinese). JC Penney fused the popularity of these YouTubers with the fashion and style of each person. Kina Grannis and David Choi created a duet entitle “my time with you”. They also each created their own music video. Natalie and Kevjumba utilize their comedy as part of the campaign. Also of note is that the whole Asian American version is run on xanga.com, a site where many teens blog.

Check out the Get That Look - Asian American edition here. You can also vote on the best outfit and could win a $400 JCPenney gift card.

What do you think of the campaign?

My Time With You video - David Choi version

My Time With You video - Kina Grannis version

My Time With You Lyrics

We're going to the beach today
We're gonna laugh and sing our cares away
The sun is shining on our face
We can take it in and let it out and say...

CHORUS:
La, la-la, la-la, la-la
La, la-la, la-la, la-la
La, la-la, la-la, la-la
La, la-la, la-la, la-la

I do enjoy my time with you
Making the best of everything we do
We're gonna try on something new
And we'll make it ours before the day is through

CHORUS

And now the sun has said goodnight
Just want to say I had a real good time
I think I really feel all right (all right)
I don't ever ever wanna say goodbye

CHORUS

La, la-la, la-la, la-la
La, la-la, la-la, la-la

Shanghai Restoration Project on NPR

Traditional Chinese instruments meet Hip-Hop & Electronica.

An experiment in cross-cultural soundscapes, The Shanghai Restoration Project draws its creative inspiration from the old 1930s Shanghai jazz bands, an early combination of East and West that's become an international legend. The Project revives this exotic blend by introducing Eastern instruments and rhythms to the Western sounds of hip-hop, jazz, and electronica.

NPR asked Liang to explain how he went about reflecting the musical landscape of Shanghai, as heard on the latest Shanghai Restoration Project album, Instrumentals: Day-Night. Listen to the interview Shanghai Restoration Project: Hybrid Backbeats.

Producer Dave Liang has worked with artists on Bad Boy, Motown, and Universal Records. His music has been featured in films such as "Red Doors" (Winner TriBeCa Film Festival '05), on tastemaker radio stations such as KCRW and NPR, and in clubs and lounges the world over.

Together At Last by Wong Fu Productions

This is an engagement video Wong Fu Productions made for their friends Eddie and Sarah who recently got married this summer! They have a great story. Eddie lived in LA, Sarah lived in Taipei. For 4 years they had to deal with this distance in their relationship, always having to fly back and forth. Finally, the two are Together At Last. The song used is "Say it Again" by Marie Digby. The video is quite entertaining and very clever.

I'm Yours by David Choi, Happyslip, and Wong Fu productions

David Choi, Happyslip, and Wong Fu productions don't all perform together, but each of these YouTubers have their own style of singing "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz. This song was requested over 100 times from fans of David Choi, his most requested cover of all time. Happyslip did her version after the Houston YouTube Gathering. Wong Fu Productions did a cute wedding video with this song too. Lastly, talented mashup artist Norwegian Recycling did a great mix with I'm Yours entitled How Six Songs Collide.

Help with David Choi's album

Here's a note from David Choi about his upcoming album
I wanted to open up this opportunity for everyone here who have supported me and been an active part of this forum. I've been thinking about what I'm going to do for my album cover art and here's what I came up with.

Basically, I'm going to create a collage of everyone's art and make it my cover. I'm thinking little boxes lined up in rows and columns. I'll decide if I want to use your picture, depending on what it is. You will not be compensated for this except you will be able to say you are a part of my album (literally!).

OK, so what to draw? You can draw either a picture of me or something relating to me, or my songs. Here are some songs that will be on my album for inspiration...

Don't Fade Away Enjoy the View Heart Hold On Only You Our Song Windmill Thief in the Night Won't Even Start

============

I recommend drawing something simple, because the more art I get, the smaller those boxes will be and harder to see your artwork. I also suggest you don't use words. Just pictures. After you finish your art, send them to me in your BEST resolution/quality possible. You can send up to 3 pictures.

MAKE SURE TO PUT YOUR NAME OR USERNAME AS THE FILE NAME OF THE ARTWORK.

davidchoimusic@gmail.com - Make the subject title ARTWORK FOR ALBUM

And remember, the pictures will be scrunched down, so in detailed pictures, you won't be able to see all the intricacies BUT, there is a chance that I won't get as many pictures and yours will be the only one there if you DO decide to make something fancy.

DO NOT GRAB PICTURES FROM THE INTERNET!!!!!!!! MUST BE ALL ORIGINAL ARTWORK!!!!!!!!!

David Choi tells you how you can help with his album

Swoon by Marie Digby

Marie Digby release her first album earlier this year including a music video for her single "Say It Again". She has been touring recently and had time to record her latest song Swoon.

Swoon : 2. to enter a state of hysterical rapture or ecstasy: The teenagers swooned at the sight of the singing star. --noun

To make the video, she had to find a spot behind the hotel she's at. The chair she's sitting on is an abandoned chair in the parking lot (missing an arm). To record, she propped a computer with a camera on a shopping cart. (Talk about resourceful. The things you do as you become a budding star.)

Swoon by Marie Digby

Lyrics to Swoon by Marie Digby

honey, i can't spell it out for you
this is far beyond
a miss-match of our personalities
you insist that life should always be
about saving and simplicity
but what a bore that sounds to me
and yet.. oh....
you keep on crawling back into my mind
and .. oh....
lately i'm feeling things that i just can't deny

i should know by now this is bound to get messy
but i don't care, no i don't care

cause you make me swoon
butterflies, dizzy head, flutter heartbeats
you make me swoon
shaky hands, stuttered words, what is happening?
i never thought that you would be the one
to make me swoon...

to make me swoon..

now darling
i know it's safe for me to say
that we don't always see eye to eye
but that's what i like about you
i will be the girl to set you free
help you put your mind at ease
and you'll hold steady ground for me

i should know by now this is bound to get messy
but i don't care, no i don't care

cause you make me swoon
butterflies, dizzy head, flutter heartbeats
you make me swoon
shaky hands, stuttered words, what is happening?
you make me swoon

Stars & Stripes FOREVER! by the Muppets

A bunch of Muppets got together to celebrate the 4th of July and sing Stars and Strips Forever. The video includes a wide range of Muppets - Sam The Eagle, Beaker, Animal, Bobo Bear, Swedish Chef, a penguin, a couple of chickens and Crazy Harry. (Make sure you watch all the way to the end of the clip!!) Ok, this video clip doesn't really have an Asian American angle to it, unless you grew up watching the Muppets. (Muppet Babies viewers may like this too.) It's great to see the Muppets using the internet to promote themselves.

Records to start her solo career. Jessi Malay's solo album is scheduled to be released in 2008. Her latest single to be release is Cinematic.

Gonn' make you cinematic, so good at it

(Verse 2)
Hot as an oven wearin' notin' but a bellyring
I Turn it over, imma show ya' how i do my thing
And i ain't stoppin' got it poppin on the video

'Cuz you know i go hot (oh)

(Chorus)

Before Russell Peters became a comedian, he was a skratch DJ on the 1's and the 2's. Whenever he's in the San Francisco Bay Area, he's clownin' & cuttin' it up at DJ QBert's skratch dojo, "The Lair of the Octagon." Filipino-American DJ QBert is a former DMC World Champion in the early 90's. Kimora Lee Simmons gets the kids

Ming Lee

Aoki Lee

"The Insider" obtained court papers that show Kimora Lee Simmons, 33, has won sole custody of her two daughters - Ming, 8, and Aoki, 5. The half Japanese and half African American CEO of Baby Phat will have the legal authority to make decisions regarding her daughters' health, education and welfare. Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, 50, gets the girls one week out of every eight and time for summer vacations & holidays.

Russell Simmons will pay Kimora Lee $20,000 per month per child. (That's almost $500k per year for both kids!!!) The child support will be paid until each girl reaches age 19 1/2, becomes emancipated, dies, marries, becomes self-supporting, no longer lives with Kimora Lee Simmons, joins the armed forces or if the court later orders otherwise. Also he is required to purchase or lease a new car that is valued at no less than $60,000 for the use and benefit of his daughters once every 24 months.

Here's a post by Russell Simmons on his blog entry entitled "Russell Sets The Record Straight"

Fron NPR's site:
Lyrics Born is a Japanese-American musician making waves in the world of hip hop, by fusing funk, rock, and R&B. But he doesn't like to talk about his ethnic background — except in his songs. Finishing the Game on DVD

Finishing the Game by Justin Lin comes out on DVD today. Grab your own copy of Finishing the Game today!! See al your favorite Asian American stars including Roger Fan, Sung Kang, and Dustin Nguyen.

Finishing the Game synopsis
Background: On July 20, 1973 at the zenith of his popularity amongst fans and continuing rise of his stardom both within and outside the film industry, Chinese American martial arts action star Bruce Lee -- suddenly and unexpectedly -- died while in Hong Kong. He was just 32. Within six weeks of his death, "ENTER THE DRAGON" was released and instantly became an international box office smash cementing his legend, albeit a posthumous one.

At the time of his death, he was at work on a passion project entitled "GAME OF DEATH" for which a 12-minute action sequence had already been shot and vaulted at the film studio. Unfazed by this "minor" distraction, and perhaps equally shocking due to the star’s death, the film’s stony executives callously made the decision to complete the unfinished film by rushing to find a replacement for its deceased leading man and star.

FINISHING THE GAME delves into the exhaustive, worldwide search for that replacement through a period re-imagining of events as seen through the eyes of five somewhat unlikely yet, prime candidates. A wannabe b-movie actor who shares the same initials as the legend; a starry-eyed dotor; a traumatized refugee; a southern bumpkin with a penchant for chili fries and an Asian American activist of questionable ethnic origin -- all vie to follow in the legend's sizable steps, but ultimately fight for something far removed from a career-making role.

As the lengthy audition process intensifies and good-natured camaraderie gives way to backstabbing rivalry, the five subjects’ eyes are opened as they learn that the scripted game pales in comparison to the real one.

Fruit Fly was shot almost solely in San Francisco from March 31 to April 20 (3 weeks) on a tight budget. Fruit Fly will probably make the Asian American film festival circuit in 2009. Get Your Whistle Wet by Mochipet

Get Your Whistle Wet is a cut from Mochipet's Microphonepet Album. Mochipet's Get Your Whistle Wet is a mashup of house vs electronic music vs hip hop. The fusions of the music makes for a slick tune, but the video is very wacky, weird, and psychedelic. The description on the video calls it "A kaleidoscopic journey of Pies, Shoes, Dinosaurs, Skis, and Microdots. Find out why Timmy is obsessed with Shoes and Pies." When you watch the video, it is truly a kaleidoscopic adventure. If you can get enough Mochipet music, you can click over to the remix site.

More about Mochipet
Born in Taiwan R.O.C. to rocket scientist father and kindergarten teacher mother, David Wang (a.k.a. Mochipet) did not get his start in music until the age of 15, when the urge of metal guitar overtook him in Livermore California. Rocking through a set of 2” speakers and a cheap stiletto six-string, David Wang conjured up the forces which began his music adventure.

David’s music has also caught the ears of the Sports and Skateboarding world. You may have heard his songs being featured on Fuel TV and Directv Payperview with skate legends such as: Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Christian Hasoi, Ray Barbee, Laban Pheidias, Jason “Weeman” Acuna, Rob Dyrdek, and Anthony Van Engelen.

Young & Restless in China

PBS' FRONTLINE presents Young & Restless in China. In Young & Restless in China, airing Tuesday, June 17, 2008, from 9 to 11 P.M. ET on PBS (check local listings), FRONTLINE presents intimate portraits of nine young Chinese over the course of four years, examining the reality of their lives as they navigate their way through a country that is changing daily. They are westernized, savvy about today’s interconnected world, ambitious – and often torn between their culture and their aspirations. Set to an original soundtrack of Chinese rock and hip-hop music, this provocative film presents an in-depth look at what it means to be young and Chinese today. FRONTLINE follows these Chinese lives as they struggle to find their paths in the nation's booming economy and confront the opportunities and challenges of modernity. As China prepares for its global "coming out" party at the Olympics, they highlight themes of capitalism, nationalism, identity and globalization that are creating the new China.

Falling lyrics by Dustin & Phillip:

sitting here contemplating.
you look at me while ur waiting.
what im insinuating:
this problem you've been creating
makes me wanna run away
im thinking that i cannot stay
i try my best to let you know
that i just wanna let u go.

chorus:
im falling (2x)
im falling out of love with u
ur calling; you don't want the truth

im falling (2x)
ur stalling. u know this is done.
ur stalling. u know what's to come.

im falling out of sync with u
im telling u that we are through

i dont wanna kiss those lips
dont wanna stay here in ur grip
and everytime i let u know
u hold me close; wont let me go.
this chain u've got around my neck;
it chokes when u've got me in check,
holding tightly; i can't breath.
just loosen up and let me leave.

Priscilla Ahn releases A Good Day

Singer Priscilla Ahn was born and raised in a small town in Pennsylvania. She grew up singing in her school and church choirs, and later in coffee shops, bars, and music clubs around Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York City. After deciding to move out to the West coast Priscilla began establishing herself on the Los Angeles music scene, and became a fixture at LA’s Hotel Café.

In 2006, Priscilla recorded and released a self-titled EP which began to win her fans such as influential deejay Nic Harcourt of LA’s KCRW. Priscilla Ahn featured her own original songs including “Rain” and “Dream,” the latter of which appeared in the DreamWorks film Disturbia. In 2007, Priscilla was signed by Blue Note Records and began recording her major label debut with producer Joey Waronker.

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Priscilla Ahn's Blue Note Records debut, A Good Day, is a collection of 11 gorgeous folk-pop songs with nuances that reward upon each listen. Racist Amy Winehouse home video

Grammy award-winning artist Amy Winehouse was in a disturbing home video shot last year around May 2007, weeks after she and her husband eloped. In the video Amy Winehouse and her friend Sarah sing a racist song to the tune of kid classic "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes". However, the words we changed to "Blacks, Pakis, Gooks and Nips, Gooks and Nips!" As the racist song is being sung, you can also see drug paraphernalia all over the place. The person behind the camera is Amy Winehouse's husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who is currently behind bars.

It's time to go rehab. You need to go, go, go.

Return of the Bgirl by Masia One featured on YouTube

Over the past few months there have been lots of buzz about b-boys (Planet B-boy, Alwayz Be Boyz, Hype Nation), but what about the b-girls? Take a peek into the b-girl culture with Return of the Bgirl by Masia One. It's featured on YouTube today. This Asian female rapper has got some mad skillz along with the b-girls in the video too!! Here's more about Masia One.
Masia One was born in Singapore, grew up in Vancouver BC and moved to Toronto. She discovered Hip hop culture as a young girl in Singapore after stumbling upon a bootleg version of a Public Enemy Tape in a marketplace. In her formative years, she dabbled in all elements of Hip hop culture including graffiti and break dancing but her accomplishments lie as an emcee.

In 2003 she started her own record label, The M1 Group and debut her first album, Mississauga. In a short time span, the M1 Group released 3 videos that gained national airplay to correspond with the album including the Much Music Video Award nominated Split Second Time. This marked the first time a female has been nominated for this award in the category of Hip hop.

Masia One is currently finishing her sophomore release. PULAU (The Islands) will debut Spring 2008. Following a trip back to Singapore early 2006, Masia One was reminded and inspired by the island of her birth. This visit was followed by a journey to various islands internationally including Malaysia, Indonesia, Hawaii, Japan and Jamaica, solidifying the new album concept. PULAU promises to pay tribute to both her Canadian and South East Asian heritage as well as explore the influences of her new found musical environments. With a solid team of producers and collaborators, Masia One is set to once again push the boundaries of Hip hop and will continue to set a new standard for independent artists in the music industry.

Leave Out All The Rest by Linkin Park

A few days ago Linkin Park released the music video for Leave Out All The Rest from their Minutes to Midnight album. The video is directed by band member Joe Hahn and shows what daily life of the band's members would be like if they lived in outer space. It's almost like a trailer for a movie. FYI - Linkin Park has two Asian American band members Mike Shinoda and Joseph Hahn. Keep rockin' guys!!!!

Lyrics for Leave Out All The Rest by Linkin Park

I dreamed I was missing, you were so scared
But no one would listen, 'cause no one else cared
After my dreaming, I woke with this fear
What am I leaving when I'm done here?

So if you're asking me, I want you to know

When my time comes, forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed
Don't resent me, and when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory, leave out all the rest

Leave out all the rest, don't be afraid
I've taken my beating, I've shared what I made
I'm strong on the surface, not all the way through
I've never been perfect, but neither have you

So if you're asking me, I want you to know

When my time comes, forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed
Don't resent me, and when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory, leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Forgetting all the hurt inside you've learned to hide so well
Pretending someone else can come and save me from myself
I can't be who you are

When my time comes, forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed
Don't resent me, and when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory, leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Forgetting all the hurt inside you've learned to hide so well
Pretending someone else can come and save me from myself
I can't be who you are

I can't be who you are

Kickin' It In Geumchon with the EV Boyz

Kickin' It In Geumchon is the first music video from the EV Boyz about a little town called Geumchon. Christian Zonts, Mike Nance, and Brian Peterson ― call themselves the EV Boyz named after their employers, English Village. These English instructors from the US wrote a song about their experience teaching abroad in South Korea. The Beastie Boy like song is pretty catchy. The video shows footage of different things you can do in Geumchon and the food and drink you can eat in Korea.

Watch Kickin' It In Geumchon

Here's the lyrics to Kickin' It In Geumchon by the EVBoyz
Intro:
This song goes out to all the waygooks lookin’ for the place to be

Chorus:
Kickin’ it in Geumchon, Oh, Oh
Komsomnida, Annyong Haseyo
Kickin’ it in Geumchon, Oh, Oh
, Komsomnida, Annyong Haseyo
Kickin’ It, Where? In Geumchon Where?
In Geumchon. Where? In Geumchon Where?
Kickin’ it in Geumchon, Oh, Oh

Verse 1:
South Korea’s got Jeju, South Korea’s got Seoul
Busan and Ilsan if that’s how you roll
But when you work at EV, and live in Paju
Then the town to get down is 15 minutes from you, How do I get there?
Hop on the 900 bus
I use my T-money card so there’s never no fuss
Jump off at the station, or shall I say “yuk”
Are you fluent in Korean? No I got a phrasebook
Pang Pang, now we’re off to the races
To the backstreet market checkin’ out pig faces
Octupus on sale, squid 2 for 1
Let’s hit the waterpark for fun in the sun, I got my swimcap!
Baskin Robbins and Pizza Hut
Knock Domino’s down then slam Dunkin’ Donuts
Geumchon rocks, then it rocks some more
The street meat is sweet and corndogs galore

Chorus:
Kickin’ it in Gumcheon, Oh, Oh
Komsomnida, Annyong Haseyo
Kickin’ it in Gumcheon, Oh, Oh,
Komsomnida, Annyong Haseyo
Kickin’ It, Where? In Gumcheon Where?
In Gumcheon. Where? In Gumcheon Where?
Kickin’ it in Gumcheon, Oh, Oh

Verse 2:
Sometimes it’s spelled with a G, I’ve seen it spelled with a K
Sometimes it’s spelled with an E, I’ve seen the E go away
But regardless of spelling, pronunciation’s the same
The town’s so explosive, Boomchon could be it’s name
The movie theater keeps it real with no subtitles
But we never go cuz there’s no subtitles
But birthday party time it’s so simple to rally
We alls grab our balls at the bowling alley
Then to the Sky Golf hittin’ nothin’ but net
The locals wanna wager but it’s illegal to bet
If your mouth is dry, or if your throat’s got a tickle
Part for the Family Mart, to lick a popsicle
Hungry for bibim bop? The choices never stop
The spice is so nice could make a tear drop
We dedicate the bridge, but not in haste
To the cabbage that we ravage with the chili paste taste

Bridge:
Kimchi, Kimchi, it is good for you and me
Kimchi, Kimchi, it is good for you and me
Kimchi, Kimchi, it is good for you and me
Kimchi, Kimchi, it is good for you and me

Pre-Verse 3:
Kickin’ it
In Boomchon
Kickin’ it
in Boomchon

Verse 3:
When I go to Geumchon, I look at all the hotties
Those ahgashis, they got the hottest bodies
The padded bras, the high heeled shoes
Hey ladies? Can I buy you some brews?
Drinkin’ Cass-uh, drinkin’ Hite-uh
Feelin’ alright-uh, drinkin’ all night-uh
La festa’s no longer the best
Ride your scooter to Guemchon and head over to Zest
The barman’s got flair, flippin’ bottles in the air
Tom Cruise in Cocktail can’t even compare
Upstairs at Posse yogurt soju’s flowin’
Plus Froot Loop balls and the roofdeck’s blowin’
Nature videos while I’m singin’ my song
Number six one three seven at the local Noraebong
Want a night on the town? Wanna spend some won?
Come kick it with us, come kick it in Gumcheon

Chorus:
Kickin’ it in Gumcheon, Oh, Oh
Komsomnida, Annyong Haseyo
Kickin’ it in Gumcheon, Oh, Oh,
Komsomnida, Annyong Haseyo
Kickin’ It, Where? In Gumcheon Where?
In Gumcheon. Where? In Gumcheon Where?
Kickin’ it in Gumcheon, Oh, Oh

Thao Nguyen releases Bag of Hammers video

Thao Nguyen's latest video for Bag of Hammers is featured on the front page of YouTube today.
Here's a littel more about Thao Nguyen
According to Thao Nguyen, she has two talents: her first is she has a knack for beat-boxing and humming at the same time (Rahzel needn’t worry about any competition just yet though…) and her second, and in her opinion finest, is that she had a capacity to watch so much TV as a kid, she’s convinced her personality is made up of several different sitcom characters. Of course Thao, the 23 year Virginia-bred songwriter, is forgetting her unique voice, natural sense for a good melody, and striking lyrics, skillful guitar plucking and her deadly dry sense of humour. Thao’s debut for Kill Rock Stars, showcases all these talents and more, proving she’s a star in the making.

Sanjaya to appear in a commercial

Sanjaya Malakar, former contestant on season six of “American Idol,” follows in the footsteps of Kevin Federline, Fabio and MC Hammer, who appeared in previous Nationwide's Life Comes at You Fast commercials. Sanjaya’s "American Idol" experience is another Life Comes at You Fast example. In the spot, Sanjaya visits a monastery in India to seek advice and he is told that he needs a retirement plan, and some work on his hair. In keeping with its unique campaign, the ad will use humor to make an important point: Life Comes at You Fast – often before you realize it.

This is the third year Nationwide created advertising specifically targeting the South Asian market. The Sanjaya ad is one of six new spots that will specifically target the South Asian market. The ad also makes an appeal to its younger audience, reminding them to start planning for their retirement now, even if it seems a long way off.

In the commercial, Sanjaya goes through several hair transformations including a hairstyle that looks like the Statue of Liberty. When will Sanjaya's 15 minutes of fame end?

Marie Digby releases Say It Again music video

Marie Digby releases her first music video "Say It Again" off her album Unfold. The video uses cute stage props and designs. It's like a stage/theater production. She's definitely enjoying her new found fame and record deal. Here's what she says bout the "Say It Again" video.
This is my official video for Say It Again!! I had so much fun shooting this video and I loved the props so much that I took a few of them home with me! I really hope you enjoy watching this ... :)

At the end you will notice a rollerskating tree - interesting note is that I almost lost my head during one of the takes... Too bad that was edited out.. ;)
BTW - Marie Digby is half Japanese and half Irish.
