Asian YouTubers Get That Look

JC Penney created a back to school marketing campaign entitled "Get That Look". With a theme of "The Breakfast Club" - one of pop culture's ultimate teen movies that is currently experiencing a resurgence among today's youth - the campaign highlights the array of lifestyle brands available at JC Penney. Created with Saatchi & Saatchi New York, the campaign features both traditional and non-traditional media components. The mainstream campaign can be found here.

What's interesting with this campaign is that the grassroots online version of "Get That Look" has college age Asian American Youtubers as spokespeople. Among the four Asian American used include Kina Grannis (HAPA - Japanese), David Choi (Korean), Natalie (Filipino), and Kevjumba (Chinese). JC Penney fused the popularity of these YouTubers with the fashion and style of each person. Kina Grannis and David Choi created a duet entitle “my time with you”. They also each created their own music video. Natalie and Kevjumba utilize their comedy as part of the campaign. Also of note is that the whole Asian American version is run on xanga.com, a site where many teens blog.

Check out the Get That Look - Asian American edition here. You can also vote on the best outfit and could win a $400 JCPenney gift card.

What do you think of the campaign?

My Time With You video - David Choi version

My Time With You video - Kina Grannis version

My Time With You Lyrics

We're going to the beach today
We're gonna laugh and sing our cares away
The sun is shining on our face
We can take it in and let it out and say...

CHORUS:
La, la-la, la-la, la-la
La, la-la, la-la, la-la
La, la-la, la-la, la-la
La, la-la, la-la, la-la

I do enjoy my time with you
Making the best of everything we do
We're gonna try on something new
And we'll make it ours before the day is through

CHORUS

And now the sun has said goodnight
Just want to say I had a real good time
I think I really feel all right (all right)
I don't ever ever wanna say goodbye

CHORUS

La, la-la, la-la, la-la
La, la-la, la-la, la-la

ACDC Crew : the Battle is over, but the WAR is not.

It's been about a week since the The Biggest Online Dance Battle in YouTube History went primetime. ACDC and Invisible Children have been paired up from the beginning to help raise awareness and money for the forgotten kids of Northern Uganda. So far, through the ACDC TShirt sales, they have made over $50,000 dollars for the charity. Now it's Miley and Mandy's turn!

They challenge Miley and Mandy to put their M&M Cru tshirts on sale online and throw 100% of the profits to whatever charity they choose.

They believe dance can change the world. And since this battle has begun, and the tshirts started to sell, they have been. More kids are getting educated, more kids have books, dorms, clean water because of YOU guys and girls!!

The battle is over, but the war wages on.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more updates...

Together At Last by Wong Fu Productions

This is an engagement video Wong Fu Productions made for their friends Eddie and Sarah who recently got married this summer! They have a great story. Eddie lived in LA, Sarah lived in Taipei. For 4 years they had to deal with this distance in their relationship, always having to fly back and forth. Finally, the two are Together At Last. The song used is "Say it Again" by Marie Digby. The video is quite entertaining and very clever.

Cooking Bamboo Shoots with Joi Ito

Boing Boing tv takes you with Joi Ito to cook up some delicious takenoko (竹の子), young bamboo shoots. You may know Joi Ito as a serial entrepreneur, a twittering globetrotter VC, a World of Warcraft junkie, or the CEO of Creative Commons, but he has a more traditional side, too.,br>
In this video, Joi Ito welcomes us into his back yard in Japan, where he and his partner Mizuka teach us how to hunt for and prepare this traditional seasonal delicacy from a lush bamboo forest. The episode is accompanied by an original score composed by Grammy, Academy Award, and Golden Globe-winning composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Watch Cooking Bamboo Shoots with Joi Ito

Here's the recipe for TAKENOKO (Young Bamboo Shoots):
--------------------

How to slice:

Cut tip of takenoko at an angle. Cut vertical to down middle to front.

"Akunuki" process to remove bitter taste:

In a large boiling pot add:

* Dried Chili X 3
* Rice "Nuka" husks 2 handfuls

Cold water 2 liters

Add takenoko with the cuts and husks. Full heat from water for approximately 20-40 min (until you can stick a chopstick into the takenoko). Lower heat as it comes to a boil. After completed, cut heat and leave over night.

The next day, remove husks and cut to smaller pieces and boil for 10 min.
Making "Wakatakeni":

Make 2 cups stock from "Kobu" (seaweed) and "Katsuo" (Bonito flakes). Add Thin Soy Sauce - 3 table spoon, Sugar - table spoon, Sake - 2 table spoon. Add takenoko and boil for 8 min. Add "Wakame" (seaweed) and boil for additional 2 min.

Top with "Kinome" (Japanese herb) and eat as it is OR

Make Takenoko rice:

Make stewed Takenoko above but use "Oage" (dried tofu) instead of "Wakame". Take the sauce from Wakatakeni" and add as flavor to rice in a rice cooker and prepare rice normally. After rice is done, add the stewed takenoko and oage and mix. Enjoy.

Note: "cups" are Japanese size cups which are 200ml or 200cc.

4960 by Wing-Yee Wu

4960 by Wing-Yee Wu made it into the YouTube Screening Room. The New York based director was recently invited to represent the United States as part of "Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Frontera" in Italy.

Synopsis:
The faster you run, the more likely you are to stay alive.
Aida and Josef try to communicate between the distance from Point A to Point B. An exposed space, clearly visible to snipers, prevents them from doing so. Set during the Sarajevo siege, shot in NYC, award winning short film 4960 earned Jury comments: "Brutal, riveting, fearless . . . Profound depiction of human hunger for connection, scathing social commentary . . . Dead on convergence of ethics and aesthetics."

Help with David Choi's album

Here's a note from David Choi about his upcoming album
I wanted to open up this opportunity for everyone here who have supported me and been an active part of this forum. I've been thinking about what I'm going to do for my album cover art and here's what I came up with.

Basically, I'm going to create a collage of everyone's art and make it my cover. I'm thinking little boxes lined up in rows and columns. I'll decide if I want to use your picture, depending on what it is. You will not be compensated for this except you will be able to say you are a part of my album (literally!).

OK, so what to draw? You can draw either a picture of me or something relating to me, or my songs. Here are some songs that will be on my album for inspiration...

Don't Fade Away Enjoy the View Heart Hold On Only You Our Song Windmill Thief in the Night Won't Even Start

============

I recommend drawing something simple, because the more art I get, the smaller those boxes will be and harder to see your artwork. I also suggest you don't use words. Just pictures. After you finish your art, send them to me in your BEST resolution/quality possible. You can send up to 3 pictures.

MAKE SURE TO PUT YOUR NAME OR USERNAME AS THE FILE NAME OF THE ARTWORK.

davidchoimusic@gmail.com - Make the subject title ARTWORK FOR ALBUM

And remember, the pictures will be scrunched down, so in detailed pictures, you won't be able to see all the intricacies BUT, there is a chance that I won't get as many pictures and yours will be the only one there if you DO decide to make something fancy.

DO NOT GRAB PICTURES FROM THE INTERNET!!!!!!!! MUST BE ALL ORIGINAL ARTWORK!!!!!!!!!

Lost In Sydney with Roger Fan

In May of 2008, Roger decided to spend one whole day just getting Lost in Sydney, Australia. No map, no plan...just a desire to explore and an HD camera to document it.

This is definitely not your typical journey down under. Roger spends a day making ugly meat pies, dodging bat crap, getting friendly with indigenous Australian wildlife, and just plain encountering some pretty random-ass stuff. Have fun & enjoy!

Junior Jabbawockeez

We posted a video of Lil Demon for the ACDC Crew a few days ago. We stumble across a pair of kids, Josh (11 yrs) & Jeremiah (7 yrs,) mimicing the Jabbawockeez MJ's PYT on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew. They practiced all the moves by watching it on YouTube. Apparently, they learned the whole routine in less than 24 hours. These Junior Jabbawockeez have no professional dance training.

Step Up 2 DVD release

Step Up 2 isn't the The Biggest Dance Battle in Youtube History, it's the directorial debut of Jon M. Chu. The 2004 USC graduate recruited dancers off of YouTube and MySpace to be part of Step Up 2. (One of those dancers is Adam Sevani aka Moose. Without Adam, the ACDC Crew would not have been created.) Jabbawockeez was also in the film before they won America's Best Dance Crew. The rain sequence in the movie is also Jon M Chu's idea inspired from "Dancing in the Rain."

Here's the synopsis for Step Up 2
"Step Up 2 the Streets" is the follow-up to the smash hit "Step Up," which ignited theaters in August 2006. When rebellious street dancer Andie (Briana Evigan) lands at the elite Maryland School of the Arts, she finds herself fighting to fit in while also trying to hold onto her old life. When she joins forces with the school's hottest dancer Chase (Robert Hoffman) to form a crew of classmate outcasts to compete in Baltimore's underground dance battle The Streets, she ultimately finds a way to live her dream while building a bridge between her two separate worlds.

Featuring the directorial debut of award-winning up-and-comer Jon M. Chu, "Step Up 2 the Streets" reunites much of the production team behind the original film including "Step Up's" cutting-edge hip-hop choreographer Jamal Sims, who is joined this time by choreographers Hi-Hat ("hip-hop's high diva of dance") and Dave Scott ("Stomp the Yard").

Swoon by Marie Digby

Marie Digby release her first album earlier this year including a music video for her single "Say It Again". She has been touring recently and had time to record her latest song Swoon.

Swoon : 2. to enter a state of hysterical rapture or ecstasy: The teenagers swooned at the sight of the singing star. --noun

To make the video, she had to find a spot behind the hotel she's at. The chair she's sitting on is an abandoned chair in the parking lot (missing an arm). To record, she propped a computer with a camera on a shopping cart. (Talk about resourceful. The things you do as you become a budding star.)

Swoon by Marie Digby

Lyrics to Swoon by Marie Digby

honey, i can't spell it out for you
this is far beyond
a miss-match of our personalities
you insist that life should always be
about saving and simplicity
but what a bore that sounds to me
and yet.. oh....
you keep on crawling back into my mind
and .. oh....
lately i'm feeling things that i just can't deny

i should know by now this is bound to get messy
but i don't care, no i don't care

cause you make me swoon
butterflies, dizzy head, flutter heartbeats
you make me swoon
shaky hands, stuttered words, what is happening?
i never thought that you would be the one
to make me swoon...

to make me swoon..

now darling
i know it's safe for me to say
that we don't always see eye to eye
but that's what i like about you
i will be the girl to set you free
help you put your mind at ease
and you'll hold steady ground for me

i should know by now this is bound to get messy
but i don't care, no i don't care

cause you make me swoon
butterflies, dizzy head, flutter heartbeats
you make me swoon
shaky hands, stuttered words, what is happening?
you make me swoon

A bunch of Muppets got together to celebrate the 4th of July and sing Stars and Strips Forever. The video includes a wide range of Muppets - Sam The Eagle, Beaker, Animal, Bobo Bear, Swedish Chef, a penguin, a couple of chickens and Crazy Harry. (Make sure you watch all the way to the end of the clip!!) Ok, this video clip doesn't really have an Asian American angle to it, unless you grew up watching the Muppets. (Muppet Babies viewers may like this too.) It's great to see the Muppets using the internet to promote themselves.

Filipino-American DJ QBert is a former DMC World Champion in the early 90's. Roger Fan's Adventure in Mongolia

Roger Fan (Finishing the Game) has been traveling the past 5 months to places like Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Mongolia, England, Netherlands, Canada, and Olympic Gardens. It seems that he's addicted to traveling and Mongolia is one of his favorite spots. Here's an exceprt from his blog:
Which leads me to MONGOLIA. If you have never been, I highly recommend you visit asap. Why? Well, I could spend hours pontificating on why this land-locked nation is one of the most fascinating and misunderstood places on earth. And we could discuss the fact that many of us have committed incest in our lives due to the recent scientific discovery that much of Asia's population's ancestry can be traced back to just one man, Genghis Khan. Oh yes, think twice before you get naughty with your significant other...you might just be making love to your sister. Instead, I present you this video documenting the journey of 4 lads into the heart of Mongolia. Enjoy.

Falling lyrics by Dustin & Phillip:

sitting here contemplating.
you look at me while ur waiting.
what im insinuating:
this problem you've been creating
makes me wanna run away
im thinking that i cannot stay
i try my best to let you know
that i just wanna let u go.

chorus:
im falling (2x)
im falling out of love with u
ur calling; you don't want the truth

im falling (2x)
ur stalling. u know this is done.
ur stalling. u know what's to come.

im falling out of sync with u
im telling u that we are through

i dont wanna kiss those lips
dont wanna stay here in ur grip
and everytime i let u know
u hold me close; wont let me go.
this chain u've got around my neck;
it chokes when u've got me in check,
holding tightly; i can't breath.
just loosen up and let me leave.

Cellphone Popcorn?

This video has several people putting cell phones near popcorn kernels. A few seconds later you can see the popcorn kernels popping into popcorn. Real or fake? We think this is a fake. Probably a viral video made by a company like Kobe Bryant jumping over an Ashton Martin pitching Nike Hyperdunk shoes. We don't know if this video is trying to sell popcorn, cellphones, or something else.

Update:
The video is a viral campaign for Cardo Bluetooth Headset.

This video was made on the passion and love for dance. We made it for no other reason and it was made with no other means. We didn't buy this video. We made it by calling friends and people we knew and asked if they wanted to donate their time and energy to be a part of the video. The best part of making this video was seeing people jump on board and be as passionate about dance as we are.
