Judy Chu – first Chinese-American woman in Congress

Congrats to Judy Chu for being the first Chinese-American woman elected to Congress. This week she won a runoff election against Republican Betty Chu, who is her cousin by marriage, for the House seat for 32nd district in California. Judy Chu won with 61.67% of the vote. Interestingly, her husband, Mike Eng is a member of the California Assembly. Political power couple there.

Judy already has a website at the House of Representative here. She also had congratulations from President Barack Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The President gave her a call as well as a tweet “Congratulations to CA Rep. Judy Chu district on becoming the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress” (see the tweet here.) Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on the swearing-in of Congresswoman-elect Judy Chu of California.

“On behalf of all Members of Congress, I am so pleased to welcome Judy Chu to the House of Representatives. As the first Chinese-American woman elected to Congress, her victory is a source of pride to many.”

“Over her 24 years in public service, Congresswoman Chu has been committed to the essential issues facing our nation: the strength of our economy, the education of our children, and the health of all Americans. I look forward to working with Congresswoman Chu to address these challenges and make progress for the entire nation.”
