The Chin Chens : Asian American sitcom

The Chin Chens : Asian American sitcom

Over the weekend, an article out of Atlanta came out about an Asian American sitcom “The Chin Chens” in development. (You can read more about it here.) There hasn’t been a show with an Asian American lead since All American Girl with Margaret Cho. And this year we saw the release of Outsourced with a predominantly Indian cast. Created and written by Will Hollins (who produced the sitcom “My Parents, My Sister & Me” for NBC, which featured a Jewish/African American family), The Chin Chens sitcom focuses on a multi-generational family. Here’s the main storyline: An affluent Chinese-Vietnamese family living the American dream (owning a successful chain of nail salons and Chinese restaurants), don’t know how to cope when the grandmother comes to live with them and insists on taking over every aspect of their lives, both at work and at home. It’s billed an Asian American version of the Cosby Show. The show raised more than $3 million to fund the first 13 episodes, mostly from Chinese and Vietnamese investors. Although it doesn’t have big name actors for the show, it’s already got a one year commitment to run on Colours TV on the Dish Network.

We’re not sure what to expect from this show, but here’s the casting call:

Amazing Race Season 17 Episode 6

Amazing Race Season 17 Episode 6

Departing from Norway, the Amazing Race teams travel over 1,200 miles by car, train, and plane to St. Petersburg, Russia. Once there, teams had to make their way to Vasilievsky Island and find the Rostral Columns. Landing in Russia, the seven teams raced out of the airport into taxis heading for their first clue. Will Team Jumba remain in the Amazing Race Season 17? See the full episode here.

Spoiler Alert!!

Running up to the cluebox next to the Rostral Columns, teams discovered a Detour having to choose between Classical Music and Classic Cinema. Team Jumba a chose Classical Cinema. In Classic Cinema, teams traveled to a legendary film studio and onto a soundstage where the very first movie was screened in Russia. Once there, teams had to search through piles of film clips and find one that matched any part from the scene playing on the screen. Once teams found the correct clip of Sergei Eisenstein’s classic film October, they would receive their next clue. Father and son Michael & Kevin arrived at Lenfilm Studios in first place. Running onto the soundstage, the father and son saw a massive pile of film clips heaped in the center of the stage along with hundreds more strewn across the edges. An overwhelmed Kevin told his dad, “I have no idea how to do this.” A calm Michael replied that Kevin needed to look at the images of the film of “wartime or machine or something” being played on the giant screen above them and try to find the matching strip in the huge piles.

After finally matching the film, Team Jumba gets their clue at Palace Square sending them to the town of Aleksandrovskaya. Once there, the teams face a Roadblock. In it, one team member had to don traditional babushka clothing and then plant a row of fifty potatoes. What they didn’t know was that they had to also fertilize their crop with a very generous helping of cow manure. Kevin ends up being the babushka. However, he’s not entirely thrilled to be wearing a dress. As Kevin set to work planting potatoes, he impressed the women who said to each other, “He’d be a good farm hand, yes?” Kevin continued to work hard as the babushkas cheered him on. After finishing his row of potatoes, Kevin grabbed the clue and opened it with his father instructing them to travel to the Pit Stop at St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Pulling up to St. Isaac’s Cathedral, father and son Michael & Kevin ran up the steps at one entrance but couldn’t find Phil and the mat. Michael had to convince a disbelieving Kevin to scour the park for Phil and in the time it took Michael to do this, Brook & Claire swooped into second place landing Michael & Kevin in third.

The father and son tell Phil they’re communicating better and working together better than ever
