Here’s the recap of “Trouble in Chinatown”

The FBI works with immigration control enforcement (ICE) when one of their undercover Chinese agents goes missing from a sweatshop in Chinatown, just as a gang war erupts between the leader of a human trafficking/sweatshop ring, Jimmy Lim, and the leader of what is assumed to be a prostitution ring, Henry Yoon. David and Colby get caught in the middle of this feud when they witness Jimmy shoot Henry dead and are forced to fire on Jimmy, killing him and eliminating one of the few people that can help them understand exactly what sparked the gang war. With Charlie, Larry and Amita’s help, the team discovers that Henry and his brother Walter were not only running a prostitution ring, but also a ghost bride service for the families of Chinese men who died before getting married. Henry and Walter would provide young women to be buried alive with the deceased, and had been stealing undocumented girls away from Jimmy’s operation, prompting Jimmy to confront Henry. The psychic Simon Kraft (episode 217) returns in this episode and provides assistance in locating the missing ICE agent, but is ultimately run down and killed by a fleeing suspect.

These past few months we have seen highly rated shows on network TV have episodes set in an Asian American location. We have seen Asian Americans on House and CSI. Looks like a trend is developing here.

The Gene Generation DVD

The release of “The Gene Generation” was severely delayed. The original release date was October 2007. Now The Gene Generation is on DVD. The film is directed by Singaporean director Pearry Reginald Teo and stars Bai Ling and Parry Shen. (Parry Shen was in another horror short “The TiVo” recently. We wonder if he wants to star in horror films.) Anyways, here’s the synopsis for “The Gene Generation”:

In the futuristic world of Olympia, a city on the brink of destruction, a team of scientists discovers a way to instantly reconfigure human DNA so that all disease will come to an end. But even miracles come at a cost, and we’ll find out if this new technology is actually a blessing or a curse. The DNA reconfiguration can save lives, but could potentially end them as well. Now, as the city is overtaken by gangs ters and DNA Hackers, the only promise for a better life is with the right DNA. Michelle (Bai Ling), a seductive assassin whose mission is to take out these so-called DNA hackers, is determined to use the new technology for good instead of evil. When her brother Jackie (Perry Shen) steals a genetic device from their next-door neighbor Christian (Alec Newman), a vigilante scientist, he gets dragged into the immoral cyber-underworld. Banded together with him, Michelle must fight not just for her own flesh and blood, but also for the survival of mankind.

2009 Year of the Ox Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service dedicated the Celebrating Lunar New Year: Year of the Ox commemorative 12-stamp souvenir sheet today as the second in its 12-year Celebrating Lunar New Year series. The ceremony took place in New York City at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where Chinese-American stamp artist Kam Mak serves as an associate professor of illustration. All 60 million 42-cent First-Class stamps are available nationwide.

Art director Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, MD, worked on the new series with Mak, who now lives in Brooklyn. They focused on some of the common ways the Lunar New Year Holiday is celebrated. To commemorate the Year of the Ox (Jan. 26, 2009 – Feb. 13, 2010), they chose a lion head of a type often worn at parades and other festivities. Dancers wear such heads, often made of papier-mâché and bamboo, as they perform for delighted crowds. Kam’s 16″ x 9.5″ stamp illustration was originally created using oil paints on a fiberboard panel.

The Postal Service introduced its previous Lunar New Year stamps series in 1992 was designed and illustrated by Clarence Lee of Honolulu, HI. Mak, under Kessler’s direction, is creating the second series that continues through 2019 with stamps for the years of the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar.
