Japan wins 2011 Women's World Cup

Last night, Japan won the Women’s World Cup in Germany, stunning the U.S. 3-1 in a penalty shootout after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 tie. During regulation time, Aya Miyama’s goal nine minutes from the end of the 90 minutes forced extra time. With extended play, Homare Sawa scored in the 117th minute to force the game into penalty kicks. In the shootout, defender Saki Kumagai had the honour of hitting home the decisive spot-kick as Japan triumphed 3-1 . Japan becomes the first Asian nation to win the World Cup.
