Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger with Korean kids

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger with Korean kids

At Winter Camp in Korea, a class full of middle schools do an interesting word project to the song “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” by Daft Punk. The school project took 90 minutes to do. After making signs, assigning seats, and practicing with word sign, you get this cool video. Remember timing everything.

Dumpling Days by Grace Lin

Dumpling Days by Grace Lin

Author Grace Lin is back with a new children’s book “Dumpling Days” just in time for Chinese New Year.

Pacy is back! The beloved heroine of The Year of the Dog and The Year of the Rat has returned in a brand new story. This summer, Pacy’s family is going to Taiwan for an entire month to visit family and prepare for their grandmother’s 60th birthday celebration. Pacy’s parents have signed her up for a Chinese painting class, and at first she’s excited. This is a new way to explore her art talent! But everything about the trip is harder than she thought it would be–she looks like everyone else but can’t speak the language, she has trouble following the art teacher’s instructions, and it’s difficult to make friends in her class. At least the dumplings are delicious…

As the month passes by, Pacy eats chicken feet (by accident!), gets blessed by a fortune teller, searches for her true identity, and grows closer to those who matter most.

You can get the book on Amazon.

454 Life Entertainment Toy Drive

454 Life Entertainment Toy Drive

The holiday season is a time for sharing and giving. And with the country’s current economic situation, many families are facing difficulty just trying to provide the basics. To help make the holidays merrier for families, 454 Films is inviting the community to its First Annual X-Mas for the Kids Toy Drive. You may not think the guys of 454 Life Entertainment care about the community, but they do. These guys remember their roots and they’re giving back.

“We saw news clips back in October where the local fire departments were in need of more toy donations, and we wanted to help” says Ginorocks, film director and partner of 454 Films. “Our goal is to collect a total of 10,000 toys and pass them out to kids on the day of the event. Then what we have left over we will donate to the fire departments that are in need of them.”

“Working with our sister company 454 Life Entertainment we believe we will be able to achieve our goal of collecting 10,000 toys” the film director continues.

454 Life Entertainment is an independent record label and home to music artists Thai, Drew Deezy and Nump. At a recent autograph signing event, the 454 collective had over 2,000 people at Eastridge Mall waiting in line to see them. 454 Films produces music videos and films (The Chosen One starring Rob Schneider, Missing, Yellow) under the 454 brand.

“We have pulled together local companies to help collect toys by using their locations as drop off spots.” These companies include popular San Jose based apparel company Breezy Excursion, Red Demon Tattoos which was voted one of the Best Tattoo Shops in the Bay Area and Cukui, a unique fashion company and boutique located in San Jose’s Japan Town. Additionally, these companies will help promote the toy drive and bring community awareness.

Children of the Trains trailer

Children of the Trains trailer

Filmmaker Barbara Grandvoinet has been working on a documentary for the past 5 years. This documentary presents an inspiring story of transformation. Junk-yard train cars become locations of learning and abandoned street children become hopeful youth. In 1999, Railway Police Commander Jarumporn Suramanee requested to use abandoned train cars to teach homeless children basic skills. It has now become a collective effort by the Railway Police to serve, protect, shelter, and educate homeless children living in Bangkok. The library train has become a home base, as well as a transition point, for homeless street children and troubled youth who live in and around Bangkok. The film follows the daily encounters of the street children and the cops. It brings to light the daily struggle the cops face to feed, clothe, and educate the children, and the battle to make their teaching sustainable for the children and for themselves.

Sandra Oh on North Korean Refugee Adoption Act

Sandra Oh on North Korean Refugee Adoption Act

Actress Sandra Oh is in a PSA on the North Korean Refugee Adoption Act. This Act (H.R. 1464 and S. 416) would make it easier to adopt refugee children and reduce waiting time for adopting refugee children. Your support is crucial in encouraging members of Congress to pass this bill.

The North Korean Refugee Adoption Act, if passed, would allow Americans to adopt refugee orphans who have fled the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to neighboring countries such as Mongolia, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. These children are struggling in harsh circumstances, and run the risk of being sent back to DPRK. According to the World Food Program, DPRK faces regular food shortages, and one in three North Korean children under five are chronically malnourished.

Learn more about this bill here.
