Asian Americans Struggle In Film Industry

Asian Americans Struggle In Film Industry

Interesting piece from New York about Asian Americans in the film industry. Despite picking up wins at film festivals across the country, Asian Americans still struggle for success in the entertainment industry. While breaking down Asian stereotypes is key for many Asian American filmmakers, getting money for their projects isn’t easy. Industry insiders claim that Asian/Asian American themed movies don’t appear profitable, so they rarely get picked up for traditional distribution. Out in New York, the Asian American Arts Alliance encourages filmmakers to produce their own TV shows, movies and film festivals. DIY filmmaking and self distribution seems to be the way to go these days. The film “Better Luck tomorrow” released back in 2003 is still the reference point for a wide release Asian American film.

Win Kollaboration Acoustic 5 tickets

If you’re in Los Angeles, be sure to get tickets for Kollaboration Acoustic 5. This event differentiates itself from other shows in the Kollaboration Movement by focusing on artists that perform utilizing only their “acoustic” assets, such as vocals and various non-electrical instruments. For the talent show portion of this year’s production, 9 talented acts were selected through an intense and competitive round of auditions back in March. The selected artists range from veteran performers who have already established sizable internet and regional followings, to newer artists looking to utilize Kollaboration Acoustic 5 as a springboard to introduce their talents to a brand new fan base. These selected artists will perform on stage for the audience and a panel of celebrity judges for the chance to win first prize and $1,000 in prize money. This year’s competitors are: Alexa Yoshimoto (Singer-Songwriter), Chrizle Reyes (Singer-Songwriter), Ensemble Memo (Symphonic Group), Jason Yano (Singer-Songwriter), Lindsey Yung (Singer-Songwriter), The Mood Junkies (Acoustic Trio), Nessa Rica (Singer-Songwriter), Teesa (Singer-Songwriter), and Tranley (Singer-Songwriter).

Kollaboration Acoustic 5 will also feature a special comedy performance by comedian KT Tatara, who will bring his original brand of brutally honest and logic-based comedy to the show. Based in Los Angeles, KT frequently performs in many of Southern California’s top comedy clubs and has made appearances on shows such as Comedy Central’s Live at the Gotham and Showtime’s Live Nude Comedy. As an actor, he has also appeared in recurring roles on ABC Family’s Greek and Showtime’s Californication.

Headlining this amazing showcase of talent is Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and Blue Note recording artist, Priscilla Ahn. Since moving to Los Angeles from her home in Pennsylvania to pursue her songwriting dreams, Ms. Ahn has built herself an extraordinary career as a musician. From starting out playing open mics and waitressing to get by, she has gone on to tour with artists like Amos Lee and Willie Nelson, play in venues across the globe, and have her music featured on movies like Disturbia, as well as television series like Grey’s Anatomy. With the recent release of her second full-length studio album When You Grow Up, 2011 is looking to be another milestone year for Ms. Ahn.

Lyrics to Emma Watson by AJ Rafael

you are a star
i’m just a nobody
you’re not just a girl
you are a somebody
and i wanna be
that someone for you

you cast your spells
i watch in the movies
can i pick you up
at 7 o’ clock please
cuz i wanna be
that someone for you

and i know
it’s hard for you to see
just a normal guy like me
but be just what you need
but if you would notice me
i’ll give you everything
that you are missing can i be the ordinary guy
for you

so take a good look at me
i’ll show you everything
cuz you showed me magic
can i be the ordinary guy for you

so can i be
can i be your secret
give me your heart
i promise to keep it
cuz i wanna be that someone for you

As Long As You’re There by Charice on Glee

As Long As You're There by Charice on Glee

The cast of Glee headed to New York in the season 2 finale (episode 22) to compete in the Nationals entitled “New York”. (note: spoilers begin here.) The rivalry between Rachel (Lea Michele) and Sunshine Corazon (Charice) rears its ugly head again. In the ladies room, Rachel runs into an upchucking Sunshine Corazon, who reveals that her nerves are weighing on her: singing used to relax her, but the pressures of performing in Vocal Adrenaline have changed all that. Rachel refuses to believe her, anticipating a psyche-out, but Sunshine wants to know why Rachel hates her so much – she’d heard that New Directions welcomed outcasts, but Rachel was the only one who didn’t make her feel safe there. Sunshine plans to flee to the Philippines Embassy and revoke her passport, believing it’s her only chance to escape Vocal Adrenaline.

Rachel admits that she hated Sunshine because she was good, and she urges her to stay in the competition, promising to support her from the audience when she gets nervous. Vocal Adrenaline takes the Nationals stage and, after a thumbs up from Rachel, Sunshine leads her show choir in the original song “As Long As You’re There,” drawing a standing ovation from the audience.

You can get the song on As Long As You're There (Glee Cast Version) - As Long As You're There (Glee Cast Version) - Single and pick up Glee season 2 episode 22 (finale) on New York - Glee, Season 2

Previously, Charice made a couple other appearances on Glee Season 2 including episode 1 where she sang a duet with Lea Michele and episode 17 where she sang All by Myself.

Lyrics to As Long As You’re There by Charice from Glee

Hmm
Mmm
All my life
I’ve waited for the right
Moment to let you know
I don’t wanna let you go oh

But now I’ve realized
There’s just no perfect time
To confess how I feel
This much I know is real

So I refuse to
Waste one more second without you
Knowing my heart

Baby cause I don’t
Need anything else but your love
Nothing but you means a thing to me
I’m incomplete

When you’re not there
Holding me, touching me, I swear
All of the rest could just disappear
And I wouldn’t even care
As long as you’re there

Take these words
Don’t let them go unheard
This is me reaching out
I hope you can hear it now

Cause baby my heart’s at stake
Take it
It’s yours to break

I’d rather try and lose
Than keep this love from you
Yeaah

So I refuse to
Waste one more second
Without you
Knowing my heart

Baby cause I don’t
Need anything else but your love
Nothing but you means a thing to me
I’m incomplete

When you’re not there
Holding me touching me I swear
All of the rest could just disappear
And I wouldn’t even care
As long as you’re there

Each day and night
That I’ve kept this a secret
It’d killed me
It’s time
To share what I feel inside

Sunshine with Vocal Adrenaline:
I don’t
Need anything else but your love
Nothing but you means a thing to me
I’m incomplete

When you’re not there
Holding me touching me I swear
All of the rest could just disappear
And I wouldn’t even care
As long as you’re there
