Before I die I want to… by Candy Chang at TED

Before I die I want to... by Candy Chang at TED

In her New Orleans neighborhood, artist and TED Fellow Candy Chang turned an abandoned house into a giant chalkboard asking a fill-in-the-blank question: “Before I die I want to ___.” Anyone walking by can pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space. Her neighbors’ answers — surprising, poignant, funny — became an unexpected mirror for the community. (What’s your answer?) The wall transformed a neglected space into a constructive one where we can understand our neighbors in new and enlightening ways, restore perspective, and remember we are not alone.

“Preparing for death is one of the most empowering things you can do. Thinking about death clarifies your life.”

Candy Chang is an artist, designer, and urban planner who explores making cities more comfortable and contemplative places. She believes in the potential of introspection and collective wisdom in public space to improve our communities and help us lead better lives. Other projects include I Wish This Was, a street art project that invites people to voice what they want in vacant storefronts, and Neighborland, an online tool that helps people self-organize and shape the development of their communities.

Chink the movie teaser

Chink the movie teaser

Chink the movie just concluded production a few months ago and now the first glimpse of the bloody teaser is making its way online. Chink is about an Asian American man who has internalized the racism he felt as a child and turned it into a hatred of all Asians – including himself. Meet Eddy Tsai. He hates being Asian. He’s even changed his last name to “Richards” and lies that he was adopted by Caucasian parents. His anger and his desire to be like his hero (Ted Bundy) leads him to violence and ultimately to his dream of becoming the greatest serial killer in history.

The film stars Jason Tobin (Better Luck Tomorrow and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift), Eugenia Yuan (Memoirs of a Geisha), Rane Jameson (The People I’ve Slept With), Shoshana Bush (Dance Flick), Kenzie Dalton, and Tzi Ma (Rush Hour).

The micro-budget feature CHINK was shot on location in Los Angeles in late June through early July 2012. The team was fortunate enough to have an extremely talented crew. Without their hardwork and dedication the film would not have been possible.

Lyrics to September Tea by Emi Meyer x David Liang

If autumn belonged to me
I would take these amber leaves
Throw them in a pot to watch them steep
September tea

If you or I
Ever lose track time
Pour a little bit to wet your lips
A reminder sip by sip

September it is just the beginning
September brings me closer to you

I’m betting our potion
Overpowers the ocean
A toast, a drink
A steadfast link
I’ll be back in a blink

September will be just the beginning
September draws me closer to you

If autumn comes to me
You can guess where I will be
A cozy rooftop, the skyline rests in
Our cup of September tea
