Asian Americans Struggle In Film Industry

Asian Americans Struggle In Film Industry

Interesting piece from New York about Asian Americans in the film industry. Despite picking up wins at film festivals across the country, Asian Americans still struggle for success in the entertainment industry. While breaking down Asian stereotypes is key for many Asian American filmmakers, getting money for their projects isn’t easy. Industry insiders claim that Asian/Asian American themed movies don’t appear profitable, so they rarely get picked up for traditional distribution. Out in New York, the Asian American Arts Alliance encourages filmmakers to produce their own TV shows, movies and film festivals. DIY filmmaking and self distribution seems to be the way to go these days. The film “Better Luck tomorrow” released back in 2003 is still the reference point for a wide release Asian American film.

artist & architect Maya Lin : CBS PSA

Artist/architect Maya Lin is the last Asian American to be profiled in the CBS PSAs for APA Heritage Month. At the age of 21, she was selected to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Maya Lin has gone on to create a remarkable body of work that includes large-scale site-specific installations, intimate studio artworks, architectural works and memorials. Throughout her career, she has maintained a careful balance between art and architecture.

Her architectural works have included institutional and private commissions, from a chapel and library for the Children’s Defense Fund to the Sculpture Center’s space in Long Island City to Aveda’s headquarters in downtown Manhattan to private residences throughout the Country. Ms. Lin completed the design for the Museum of Chinese in America’s new space in Manhattan’s Chinatown, which opened in the spring of 2009.

Maya Lin has been drawn to the critical social and historical issues of our time and addressed them in her memorials, including the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington DC, the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, AL, the Women’s Table at Yale University.

A committed environmentalist, Lin has consistently focused on environmental concerns, promoting sustainable building design in her architectural works, while making the environment the subject of her artworks. She is deeply committed to focusing attention back to the environment and to ask us to pay closer attention to the natural world.

Love Line(s) by Aisha Koleen

Here’s an interesting work of art by designer Aisha Koleen. She created a video comprised of about 600 shots unveiling her artwork in a moleskine folding piece. It’s an incredibly elaborate drawing/book with new visuals revealed with each fold and unfold. (Reminds us of Origami in the pursuit of perfection.)

(thanks to Makiii K. for the tip.)

HUPA Presents “Foundations” featuring work by Tony Hong

HUPA Presents "Foundations" Featuring work by Tony Hong

For anyone who is interested in attending, Hold Up Art Lovers (HUPA) will be hosting an art gallery featuring a body of work on paper and wood that artist Tony Hong has been amassing since he has begun his bold new style of line-centric work over the past two years. The show will also feature limited edition silkscreen prints hand pressed and pulled by the artist.

Tony Hong is an emerging Korean-American contemporary artist who works exclusively in ink. While he considers himself a simple line maker, these lines ultimately form an intensely detailed image of organic matter.

HUPA curator Brian says…
“The concentration and attention to detail required to execute the pieces Hong is showcasing in ‘Foundations’ is rarely seen in today’s pop centric art world. Not only does he refocus our attention from character and brand, which we typically have seen so much of in the past years, to more basic elements of art such as line and weight, but also Hong is on the cusps of the new focus in Californian contemporary which is an emphasis on design as it pertains to fine art.”

The event will be held at 358 E 2nd Street in Los Angeles. For more information, go to the facebook event page.
